Is it time for me to buy a new toaster?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37748points) May 30th, 2023

I haven’t changed the setting on the toaster in years, but it’s starting to burn my toast. The bizarre thing is that it’s only burning one side. This toaster is not extremely old.

After telling me the answer for the title question, please tell me what kind of toaster you recommend. Bonus points if I can get it at Target or Costco. (I have no idea if Costco sells toasters.)

I just did this!!! I got a super simple $25, Hamilton Beach, Target in-store. It’s not a great toaster, but it works fine.

I guess it was on sale when I got it.

My Ex got me a Dualit expensive one many years ago. It’s sometimes wonky in terms of burning some toast but I haven’t felt the urge to replace it as yet.

I love my Dualit, although they are a bit pricey (new is $ 299.95 at Williams Sonoma). But they really are the best toaster. Mine does not burn the bread unless I set it to toast for too long.

You guys sooo fancy!!!

@zenvelo Since I take my bread out of the freezer, the occasional burning probably has more to do with how defrosted it is or isn’t since I don’t change the time setting. I can’t really blame the toaster although I do.

@canidmajor My morning toast is a critical part of how my day will go! :-) (And it was a gift.)

I categorically refuse to pay $300 for a toaster. I’ve been looking at the Target site. They have some between $20 and $30 that look good.

$300 for a toaster? PFFFFFTT! ;)

janbb's avatar

^^Well, you did ask! :-)

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

I’m willing to accept a gift.

canidmajor's avatar

@janbb, well, my toast is made with my homemade bread, so that covers for a lot of appliance error. :-P

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@canidmajor Ooo! Homemade bread!

Addendum to the question: what kind of bread do you use?

I get bread at Costco from a local bakery. It’s full of seeds and yumminess.

^^^^ On bread, I eat Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grains and Seeds Whole Grain Organic Bread and at breakfast I eat Dave’s Killer Bread Cinnamon Raisin Remix Bagel.

I also eat Acme Bread Company sourdough baguettes.

I ate Dave’s Killer Bread for a long time, but I switched to support the local bakery owned by immigrants. I know the story of Dave’s, but I like the local stuff.

I think it is time to get a new toaster. The only model I know is my Kenwood which I have had for decades. I would not recommend it. It is a wilful piece of machinery prone to shedding crumbs and burning toast when I amn’t looking.

Sounds like it’s time.
I have a Cuisinart 4 slot that I have had for about 15 years. Still amazing for toast or Bagels. Also easy to clean.

For toast, I buy a sourdough bread made with miche flour. It is delicious with the butter melted in. i have never understood the English custom of buttering and eating cold toast after their eggs and bacon, even though toast racks are neat.

Side story: In nursery school my older son made me a Mother’s Day card that said, “My mother likes to eat toast and take care of my baby David.”

flutherother's avatar

I love sourdough bread and when toasted and spread with brie it is so good it is dangerous.

zenvelo's avatar

^^^^ @flutherother fresh sourdough toasted, buttered and spread with orange marmalade is the best accompaniment to bacon and fried eggs with a good cup of coffee.

Yes, time to shop.

I have this one as well as a Cuisinart at another location. I like the Kitchen Aid much better.

@SnipSnip Good to know. I like kitchen Aide products generally.

My last toaster, I think I was looking in Costco and got the one that they had. Sometimes they have things on clearance and the prices are even better.

A friend asked me to get her one for Christmas once, and she researched what was a good one, and it was something like Hamilton Beach Cool Touch, and the draw was that it didn’t get hot on the outside (hence, cool touch). I got it from Amazon, economical.

When I could still eat bread, I used a cast iron skillet to toast it.

janbb's avatar

I found the one you should get, @Hawaii_Jake !

canidmajor's avatar

Damn, @janbb, I wish I’d seen that before I bought mine!!!

Forever_Free's avatar

Danged you @janbb I have been craving toast since this question.

janbb's avatar

@Forever_Free I’m about to have some. Come on over.

I use my grandmother’s old Sunbeam from 1959. I also have a avocado green General Electric that my sister gave me back in the 70’s. When growing up, Mom’s General Electric she received as a wedding gift in 1950 always worked and probably still does.

Adjust the temp a bit and see if that helps your toaster. Also, make sure you empty the old crumbs out of it once in a while. And you could go to a second hand store to get a used toaster.

Dangit! Toast craving again.
