Did you ever cook something and have a total disaster from either the wrong ingredients or something else?

I had leftover bananas, really ripe so I decided to make banana bread. I was on the phone while I was mixing it up and totally forgot to put sugar in it. It’s baking now so it’s too late.

A friend comes from a large family (big Irish family of many kids). I was over their house when I was a teenager and the mom was busily doing her nightly cooking for 9 or 10 people, and she was making mashed potatoes. Instead of grabbing the milk container to put milk in it, she mistakenly grabbed the dish detergent and put dish detergent into the potatoes. Needless to say, the whole pot of potatoes was garbage, 5 pounds thrown away. Disaster that made for a funny story for many years.

How about you? Have you ever had a disaster when cooking or baking?

My first day at A&W I put 5 Chicken Grill’s in the deep fryer.

Also as a teen I tried to make otics spiced potatoes, and put too much nutmeg.

Also when I was a teenager I tried to make Russian chocolate apricot cake, and it turned out to be a really good brownie.

When I was young, my mom made apple pie with salt instead of sugar. She realized something was wrong when I said it was hot, but not the temperature kind of hot, and ate a bite herself. Gross.

It’s not what you’re asking for, but I recently made absolutely delicious mashed potatoes (which is no small feat for me to do physically these days) and it was left out on the counter overnight. I was so disappointed the next morning to find the bowl out where I had left it.

Our household is gluten free and I’ve had a number of cooking and baking mishaps – usually from trying to convert a standard recipe to gluten free. Awful chicken cutlets, biscuits, cookies, breads, etc. The time I tried to make the “Ted Lasso shortbread cookies” was particularly disappointing.

When we were first married and quite poor, I made a winter’s supply of chili for the freezer. Instead of chili powder, I added cinnamon. It wasn’t great but, Reader, we ate it all!

We have a story about my mom making us sandwiches for school lunch. My sister’s tasted like soap because my mom washed her hands and then cut my sister’s sandwich.

I just tried the banana bread and it’s not bad, I think because the bananas were so ripe, they were full of sugar. The recipe only called for ¾ cup of brown sugar anyway. It’s a NY Times recipe and I’ve made it before, so I know it’s reliable.

In grad school I had chicken that smelled bad. I made curry with it. Added enough curry to mask the smell, but then it became way too spicy. I decided to throw it all away so that I didn’t risk getting sick or getting chemical burns from the spice.
