What is a word that could be used to describe a Wordle guess that could possibly be the target word?

Asked by LostInParadise (32215points) June 6th, 2023

That is, the guess contains none of the letters in black squares, and all of the letters in green squares are repeated in those squares, and all of the letters in yellow squares are repeated in different squares. The first guess satisfies this condition and so does the last guess, assuming that you solve the puzzle.

It is tempting to call such guesses “legal”, but that is not quite right. Sometimes these types of move are not even the best choice. For example, if you know the location of 4 of the letters and have several choices for the remaining letter, the best strategy is to come up with words containing as many as possible of the possible fifth letters.

It is a G U E S S.

Yes, but it could be the target word, which is not true of all guesses.

But this is not permitted when playing in Hard mode. In Hard mode one must play all letters that have been revealed as yellow or green.

So I could refer to what I am talking about as a hard mode guess, even if I am not playing in hard mode.
