The house next door was recently sold, and the new owners will open an AirBnB there. Some of my neighbors are worried it will be trouble.
Do you have any experiences with AirBnBs?
Are there any near you?

Never had any issue, several nearby. It’s mostly young families that use them.
I’ve never stayed in one but there are reports on the internet about people having large parties at them. Sometimes the parties get out of hand and the owners are not around to deal with it or stop it, because they don’t even know about it. There was something in the news about six months ago about shootings that occurred at an AirBnB party. Of course, most don’t have crimes occurring but I do know that often neighbors will complain about lots of people and traffic, to the point where some towns have outlawed it or put limits on it and some condos and co-ops do, too.
My boss bought the house next-door to him and moved in. He turned his old house into an AirBnB rental and has plenty of horror stories. People will rent out his house for a night, throw a huge party until 2am on a week night and then leave it a total mess and reeking of marijuana in the morning. There’s very little repercussion to people who do that crap, even if there’s an extra $200 cleaning fee tacked on, it’s still much cheaper than renting a real venue and leaving it a mess.
I am a Superhost of 2. One is a studio in my home and the other is my entire beach house. I screen the reviews of potential guests prior to accepting.
I have not had a single bad guest in over 4 years now. Most guests will ask if they can have people over.
I also stay in AirBnB when I travel. I have had varied experiences over the years in many countries that I have stayed. I have never had a problem but again, I choose wisely.
In Hawaii the owner is very hard to contact. It was very easy to schedule a room on the internet but when people arrive there’s no owner on site and no contact information. My wife and I were lucky that the owner just happened to be present when we arrived at the house and were given entry codes. Other people arriving were locked out. We let them in but they didn’t have the codes to get into the bedrooms so they slept on the couches and floor in the living room.
Bummer.
A friend has a house that she rents out on VRBO. She has certain rules, like a maximum number of guests, the renter can’t be under 25 and no parties. THere is a camera set up faing the driveway so if anybody were to have a party, she would know. She has guests who really love her house and they return year after year.
My flat was on Airbnb for a couple of years pre Covid and I never had any problems.
