How fast does Depo shot affect your period?

Asked by SergeantQueen (12991points) July 6th, 2023

I don’t have a doctor anymore, so asking here before I freak out. I got the depo shot about a week after starting my period, last month (June) My period only lasted like 2 days. I was told to wait a week before having unprotected sex but I didn’t. Everything said that if you get the shot within a week of your period you should be fine. I was cutting it close but within the timeframe. My period is like 2–3ish days late. Do I freak out and take a pregnancy test or wait longer?

I would not freak out.

I would go take a pregnancy test so you feel better.

2–3 days late compared to when you have no fake hormones in you, is that what you mean?

She doesn’t need a doctor to pee on a stick. The doctor is going to have her pee on the same type of stick and charge triple. If it’s negative and she doesn’t get her period in a few days then she can maybe talk to a doctor.

If you live in a state that only gives you 6 weeks to abort and you would want to abort then you might have more urgency. For now, eat well, no alcohol or drugs, and take a pregnancy test.

Okay. Because now its almost a week late ish, I should take a test? I have been having a lot of issues lately that I cannot tell if they are side effects of the shot or not, Because I was told they shouldnt be the side effects.

I told you to take the test when you were 2 days late, so yes I think take the test.

Doesn’t the depo shot stop your period? Most likely you don’t have your period because of the shot, but if you think you took a big risk then take a pregnancy test to be sure.

Im just verifying. I am nervous. They said it was more likely I would miss my period down the line, not right away

I think it is a three month shot isn’t it? Meaning no period for three months. Is that what the doctor said?

I think it is very unlikely you are pregnant, but just check to be sure. You took the shot a week after you started menstruating so your timing was very good that it would stop your ovulation.

Guessing and waiting is probably increasing your anxiety. If you take the test and it is negative you will feel better.

I forgot in my first answers that the shot would probably stop your period for a few months, it isn’t like taking the pill.

Okay, I will. I am sure it is nothing.

Let us know what the test says. Are you going to do it now or wait until the morning?

Maybe this shot isn’t the best type of BC for you. Do you think you wouldn’t be able to take a pill every day consistently? If you are on the pill then you can expect a period every month and really know if you are late. Sometimes, initially, the dose is wrong and you get breakthrough bleeding, but once you are on the right dose everything is like clockwork.

Well, I have been having so many side effects that I was told I shouldnt be experiencing. So after the 3 months I am done. I Will go to the pill.

I need to buy one first. Probably tomorrow.

@SergeantQueen Don’t delay, because if you are pregnant, you want to know asap. If you’re not pregnant, it will clear your mind to know you’re not.
