How is a pitching wedge different than a 9 iron?

Asked by kritiper (25757points) July 11th, 2023

With my Wilson clubs, the wedge seems to be the same angle, style and shaft length.

Pitching wedges have a sharper angle, or are supposed to. It isn’t much different, but it is different. Here’s an article to explain the differences.

Pitching wedge is for chipping up on the green. A 9 iron is for giving some smack down the fairway.

@Dutchess_III But how are they different? I already know what they’re used for…

Just consider a PW a #10 iron. Make sense now?

@kritiper from the citation I gave, the 9 iron has a 41 degree angle, the PW has a 45 degree angle.

@Blackwater_Park Sorry. I don’t have a 10 iron I could compare it to.

@seawulf575 Thank you very much for your help answering this question! Your response was right on and very descriptive!

@kritiper There is really no such thing. Some sets have one, but it’s the same as a pitching wedge.

@Blackwater_Park Must be English… They have weird names for all kinds of stuff.

@kritiper…well wook at them!

@Dutchess_III ? Look at what? I looked at the clubs and could tell no difference. I didn’t have my protractor so I held both club heads on a flat surface and guess what? The shafts were parallel.
