What do you guys call these?

Asked by canidmajor (21640points) July 13th, 2023

Basically, an egg fried in a hole in a piece of bread https://cooking-ez.com/divers/recipe-fried-egg-bread.php.

We called them “hurricane eggs” because we could cook them on a boat under adverse conditions, but I have heard them called many other things.

I never eat fried eggs so I don’t know what they are called.

Schweinefraß.

My old boss was a golfer, & he called his a “Hole In One”.
I don’t enjoy fried eggs, so I’ve NEVER made it…hence I don’t have a pet name for it.

I don’t eat them either. I didn’t grow up eating them.

Is that what a toad in the hole is?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I don’t know ,looks good though.

I take it you don’t care for this, @ragingloli.

I’ve never had it, but I wouldn’t enjoy throwing away so much of each slice of bread.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake Yes, I think you’re correct. Here on the East coast, it seems that every family calls it something different…don’t know about the rest of the country.

@Jeruba We never threw away any bread, it was fried as well, and a little jelly or cheese put on.

@Hawaii_Jake No, toad in the hole is a sausage in Yorkshire pudding batter. It’s good!

@janbb
I am pretty sure something like that led to this scene

@ragingloli There’s no way I’m clicking that link.

So gross-looking to me. I like scrambled eggs with one egg and an extra white or two. A runny yolk just is unbearable to see someone eat. For me. I’ve never seen this presentation before. Thank goodness.

Egg-in-a-basket.

Egg-inna-Hole

I learned to make them in Cub Scouts.

My daughter loves them. I make them for her with brioche.

I don’t call it anything. It’s not something my mom or grandma ever cooked and I never saw it growing up. I have seen it in a picture before as an adult, but never in real life.

We did eat sunny side up and my husband eats over easy or over medium, but not cooked in the middle of a slice of bread. It looks like something young kids would like, because it looks creative.

According to Allrecipes dot com @Hawaii_Jake was correct & @janbb was also correct. There are 2 dishes named “Toad In A Hole”...one being the grilled bread with the fried egg in a cutout in the bread & the other being the sausage meal that @janbb described. I’ve not tried either, so I can’t recommend one over the other!!!

We called it “egg toast” when I was little . I also recall the name “toad-in-a-hole”.

“Toad in a Hole” was my initial thought.

My mom and my grandmother never made those so I never even knew it was a “thing” until a few years ago, thanks to social media.

KNOWITALL's avatar

We don’t call them anything as I make quail egg crostinis instead, but I have heard the ‘toad in a hole’ used before. Maybe I’ll try it soon.

Toad in a hole.

So I finally remembered and we use qual eggs in corned beef hash. They are hash brown nests. Two different thing’s I know. It’s really good.

Zaku's avatar

I call that “a peculiar egg-in-toast thing I’ve never seen before today”.

Toasted eggs. My boyfriend in college introduced me to them. We put cheese on them. SO GOOD!!
