Would recommend watching the new Barbie movie. From the reviews, I understood that the plot largely circulates around the stereotypes of beauty in modern society. It seems to be largely based on stature.
If you have watched it would you recommend it and do you agree with the message that is being conveyed?

5 star review. One of the best movies of the year. Brilliant satire.
I laughed quite a bit, and there are some genuinely emotional scenes that made me tear up. But the treatment of some of the characters, especially Ken, comes across as the “all men are trash” type nonsense. However, I’m secure enough to laugh at SOME jokes towards the stupidity of toxic masculinity, which is why it didn’t bother me too much. But there’s a speech by America Ferrara near the end that comes across like a Ted Talk, not a real movie. So overall, Barbie is a mixed bag for me.
@rockfan So it’s a movie that made you laugh, cry, and think. Doesn’t sound too bad!
I would go to see it but I don’t want to risk pink screen burn on my irises.
My daughter saw it this past weekend with four friends. They’re all high school age. They told me they liked it and they were talking about it. I asked her the other day what it was about and she told me in more detail. She said she feels like if a little kid saw it, they mgiht not understand all the themes but an older kid would.
It looks very visually appealing, Instagram-worthy (what I call “gramworthy”).
I will watch it once it is on the pirate bay.
I am sitting in the cinema right now to watch Oppenheimer though. Seat right in the centre.
@ragingloli Let me know what you think. I’m not drawn to it because I hate the atomic bomb but everyone says the film is good.
I saw Barbie yesterday and really liked it a lot. It dragged in a few places but on the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Agree that it is not for younger kids but pre-teens and up could enjoy it.
@janbb
The atomic bomb is not really the focus of the film (frankly, I found the actual explosion to be rather underwhelming), but the life of Oppenheimer himself, his allegiances, relationships with others, his moral conflict after the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the political shenanigans he had to face after the project ended and he started advocating for non-proliferation, including his fall from grace in the eyes of government for his previous involvement/association with the communist movements.
Overall, a great movie, if a bit too long and too loud in places (but that is Nolan for you). And you will have to get used to the constant jumping around in time.
@ragingloli Thanks for that great synopsis! I will probably wait til it comes out streaming so I can watch it in segments but you made it sound much more interesting.
@ragingloli Agree on the loud thing, although that’s part of the design of the movie. I also was a bit distracted by the time jumping (Wait, what? Did I miss something?) but you just have to trust that Nolan brings you home in the end. My only criticism is that I thought the nude scenes were totally gratuititous and I would have been much happier if they fleshed out more of the scientist in the Project as opposed to Florence Hugh.
I was fine with the other scientists not being fleshed out.
What I disliked was the first part of the film, where they rushed through his early life. It felt like I was watching a trailer.
^^Was he born in DE or the US?
Florence Pugh, not Hugh. Oops.
I’ll probably wait until it comes out on streaming to watch it, although I would like to see it. But I just saw the Indiana Jones movie and I really want to see Oppenheimer on the big screen, and that pretty much kills my movie budget for the next 5 years! :-D
Movies are so expensive nowadays!
@JLeslie
His parents were German immigrants, and he himself studied physics in England and then Germany.
@LifeQuestioner
How much does a ticket cost? I paid 10€. No snacks/drinks.
I can’t help feeling that if Barbie liked to blow things up and Oppenheimer was fascinated by the colour pink that the world would be a much better place.
@ragingloli Our movie tickets are usually somewhere between $9 and $12 in my area.
I’ll have to read up on him. His parents must have come to the US in the late 1800’s, that’s interesting to me. I think on my mom’s side her dad’s parents came from Austria during that time.
For reserved seating, it’s $15.39 to see Barbie at 7:15, $13.39 for seniors, $11.99 for children 3–11. Couldn’t find how much for walk-ins; it’s ridiculous how they hide their pricing! Took 2 different sites and 15 mins just to find what I did find.
@ragingloli I just clicked on a few tickets at the local theater (in a city in CT) and I got anywhere from 14.29 for an adult, matinee ticket, 12.29 child matinee ticket, 13.29 senior matinee ticket to 19 dollars, adult regular times, 16 dollars, child regular time and 17 for senior ticket, regular times plus 2.69 convenience fee. Not sure if it’s one convenience fee per purchase or per ticket.
I haven’t been to a theater in a long time and this is why – it’s so expensive for one adult and one child or maybe my teenager is considered an adult now, I’m not sure, but it would be over 30 dollars either way.
@ragingloli They don’t put taxes on tickets in my state. When I went to see the Barbie movie at an afternoon showing last week, it was $10 per senior plus a $4.95 convenience fee for buying the tickets online. So $25 for the two of us and well worth it in entertainment value in my opinion. Where I think they really screw you is if you buy drinks or snacks.
Popcorn is easily 8 to 10 dollars and a drink is about 7, and a larger size is only a dollar or two more so it really encourages you to get a larger one. I try to bring my own drink when possible. Theaters don’t mind as long as you’re subtle about it. Some people (on Fluther as well as real life) think it’s horrible to screw the theater out of the food and drink money but it there are two choices – go to the theater with your own food/drink or not go at all because you just can’t afford ticket(s) and food/drink from the theater, I think at least if you attend the theater at all it’s a plus for the theater.
They actually check your bags here to make sure you do not smuggle your own food and drink inside of the cinema. I got a snack after the movie from a Bratwurst stand in the nearby shopping promenade for 3,50.
Here, I wouldn’t mind if movie food was a bit more money than on the outside, but it’s so, so much more.
@ragingloli Don’t know if it’s with taxes, but the fact that it’s $$ plus 0.39 tells me it may be. That’s an odd amount to charge…$15.39. We have 7% tax here.
