Has anyone here seen the new Barbie movie?
If so, can you tell me if there are any maps in the movie, whether it’s fictional or real?
I will elaborate the reason later when I know there are people here that have watched it. It may sound like a silly question, but it’s actually something really important to me.

I heard that it was banned in some countries because the maps were erroneous.
@smudges I was holding back talking about it but you beat me to it :D yes, the movie is indeed banned here because of the map. The reason, as we were told, is that it depicts a sea territory that belongs to China but actually covers other countries’ territories. The problem is that since the announcement we are never told which map specifically caused the ban. Some people spread the rumor that it was the map shown in the trailer. The problem is that the map is clearly crudely drawn with no attempt to make it accurate. So the theory goes that there are multiple maps in the movie with more sinister purpose. So I’m asking this question to confirm whether the theory is true.
The map in question is this one
The issue is the dashed line that represents Barbies journey to the real world. Some people have taken it to represent the nine dash line although quite frankly looking at the picture I suspect that is due to the growing right wing trend to be offended by stuff rather than any sinister intent on behalf of the film makers. More likely the content of the movie that calls out misogyny is the real reason its banned.
Yes, there is a cartoonish map of the world. Why is is it important to you?
@Caravanfan read my response above. It’s actually something more than just a movie.
@Lightlyseared we are actually aware of the map in the image. It was all over the Internet right after the ban. The problem is that I have a very hard time believing that this was the map that got banned. You have to have an active imagination to really see the controversial line. And I really don’t believe this is what some people in the government believe. Since it is banned now I have no way to confirm anything. Maybe your theory is right?
@Mimishu1995 Ah, missed that. Yes, the banning of the movie because of a cartoonish map is stupid as shit.
@Mimishu1995 That is the only map I can remember from the film. I suspect the people who banned it had not seen any more of the film than the trailer. Righteous indignation generally does better with less facts
@Lightlyseared,

Excellent point, and well stated. I mean to remember that.
Yes. It’s important to recognize that there is not really a pink dream world filled with Barbie playhouses either.
China doesn’t have anything to do with the map. What are the chances the artist who drew the map was pro-China and did that deliberately hoping no one would notice or give a hoot? Zilch?
I think people need to chill. This is a fantasy movie about a child’s doll.
It demolishes toxic masculinity, which is terribly woke.
I just saw it. Really adorable movie that makes some great points. Only one map and that was a cartoonish map that just showed Asia as one big blob. Stupid ass reason to ban the movie.
@janbb So glad you enjoyed it!
My sister and niece and 10 year old grandneice went to see it. They all enjoyed. Apparently it is about male toxic masculinity but I don’t see anything bad about the movie. At least not the way my sister described it.
There is also a long tradition of movies for children that addressed social issues. I think its ridiculous for people to complain about this movie. Its no different than these movies. But of course, this movie attacks MALE toxicity.
