No! How old was he? Sad to hear this.
He was70 & had been battling cancer for something like 3–4 years.
Wow, I didn’t realize he was so much older than me. 70 isn’t very old though. I hope he didn’t suffer too much. I never was a big fan of his on screen persona, but I liked him as a person when I saw him in interviews.
I watched “Pee Wee’s Playhouse” every Saturday. I have the dollhouse, filled with every tiny action figure from the show. I proudly display larger Pee Wee, who sits in larger Chairy, and larger Pterry hangs from my ceiling. Just yesterday, I wore my playhouse t-shirt.
Yes, I’m a devoted fan of Paul Reubens. What a sad loss this is.
Pee-Wee had a way of getting nerve wracking if I watched him for too long. Yet, I liked the Paul that I saw in interviews!!! I had heard that he had cancer, but not that it had taken hold this severe. I was shocked & saddened to see the headline!!!
“lost” is putting it a bit strongly. To me, his demise is no loss. Condolences to his family, but I was never a fan of his, especially after the scandal.
I have a Pee Wee Herman lunch box someplace. Is it worth a lot of money now? :-)
Yes, I’ve heard. I was just on Twitter watching clips of his movie, the original one. I forgot how much that cracked me up.
I forgot about the scandal!
Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho
“I know you are, but what am I?”
He made me laugh. That would make him happy.
Maligned, misunderstood and magnificent. Rewatching clips of his work this morning had me laughing and crying at the same time.
Do you remember Pee-Wee being on The Dating Game??? I don’t remember that, but I think he said he won.
I was too late to edit my comment but of course, it’s sad when anyone dies relatively young.
We watched the first half of Big Top Pee Wee last night because it was “Free to me” on Amazon Prime. I wanted to like it.
I’ll check out the trivia on IMDB and see if there are interesting Easter Eggs I can look for in the last half.
The first time that I heard of Peewee I was working in a Hospital in San Francisco. I was drawing blood on a patient in the ICU when I heard outbursts of wild laughter coming from a small crowd of doctors and nurses huddled around a patient’s TV. I went over and saw the outrageous Peewee. So funny at first. Got lamé pretty fast.
I was a teen in the 80s when he became popular and I quickly became a fan. I’ll miss him.
Pee Wee’s Playhouse was brilliant and weird children’s programming. Way ahead of its time. Paul was a fabulous comic. I really liked him and am sad he’s gone.
PW Playhouse was certainly weird. Never got into it.
^^ The Playhouse wasn’t exactly my cup o’tea either. I enjoyed it for short periods of time, but it grew old fast, so I could only take it in small doses. I didn’t watch any of the movies either because 90–120 min was way too much of an overload!!! I did enjoy Paul on talk shows.
According to his IG, he had been fighting cancer for the last 6 years. According to his family, he started calling friends last week to tell them he wouldn’t be around much longer. He apologized to his fans on IG for not warning them that this was in his future & telling them how much he loved them.
Although his persona was kinda out there, he seemed to be a really good guy in his real life!!!
@cookieman Pee Wee’s Playhouse was brilliant and weird children’s programming.
I fully agree about brilliant and weird, but Pee Wee’s Playhouse was adult humor in the guise of a children’s show. The program was loaded with innuendo and insinuation, some of it quite naughty. But, it all went over the heads of any kids watching, and we grownups got to laugh.
@Love_my_doggie: Absolutely true — but so were the original Looney Tunes cartoons.
@RocketGuy: Yes they did, but they also had Bugs Bunny cross-dressing, political references, sexual innuendo, and racist stereotypes.
And trust me, I’m a lifelong fan — but let’s not pretend Looney Tunes, Merry Melodies, and (later) even Tiny Toons didn’t have adult humor and references too.
Guess his big adventure is over.
@LifeQuestioner THANK YOU!!!
I had searched for that to link to the Q & it just wouldn’t come up. I knew it was there but I didn’t get it with my seatch. When I initially heard of his passing, they said that he had won The Dating Game. That didn’t make sense to me, so now everything seems right!!!
I was in my late 20’s when he first became popular & in my 30’s when The Playhouse hit Saturday mornings. It was on CBS & a smaller local network put Looney Tunes against it & the Tunes won out with me!!! So, I never got all wound up in The Playhouse. I’m still a Looney Tunes fan. I have a Boomerang membership for about $60/yr & I can watch my Tunes anytime I want to & I also get the good old Tom & Jerry with it!!!
@LadyMarissa you’re very welcome! But he may have won in a later episode from what I’ve read, but that’s the only clip I’ve found so far. Funnily enough, I was just browsing through YouTube last night and I had watched a couple in memoriam clips about Paul Reubens, and that one came up, so I watched it and then I knew I had to share the link with you! I just didn’t want you to think I had spent hours and hours searching for it when it really just popped up on my browse list. :-D
@LifeQuestioner I didn’t spend hours & hours looking; however, I did search for quite a while to come up empty handed & I had most of the key words in the title. :-{…YT is a strange critter!!! Anyway, THANKS again for sharing!!!
