Which situation comedy characters would you like to have met (and would have gotten along with)?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33551points) August 9th, 2023

Not the actors themselves – the role they played.

Gilligan? The Professor? Mary Ann? The Skipper?

Rob Petrie?

Granny (on the Bev. Hillbillies)? Uncle Jed?

Batman? Robin? Alfred?

Maxwell Smart? The Chief? Agent 99?

and of course, many, many others.

Whose on-screen personalities would have been sympatico with yours?

Jack on Three’s Company. I think he would be fun to hang out with.
Jim Rockford from Rockford Files. I would like him as a next door neighbor. He would be fun to listen to, take a walk with or maybe get gardening advice.
Oh, and Murphy Brown from show with the same name. Such a sarcastic person!

I would have loved living in New Rochelle on the same block as Rob and Laura Petrie and had a chance to go to parties with Alan Brady!

Larry Mathews, who played Richie Petrie, was an actual fraternity brother of mine. He was in the chapter at UCLA.

Johnny Fever, Venus Flytrap, and Herb Tarlik.

@canidmajor I forgot about Venus… what a character he was.

@zenvelo I’ll be on that block too!

The Meathead from All in the Family and I probably have similar politics.

Rocky the Flying Squirrel or even more so, Mr Peabody and his boy, Sherman.

Wally Cox as Mr Peepers, got to be in black and white though.

Don Herbert as ‘Mr. Wizard’ to Science

Simpatico? hmm. The thing I notice about this question, for many sitcoms, is that the cast tend to be part of the joke, and even when they’re not ridiculous, they are often problematic or stressed-out people with chronic complaints and problems. So that’s an issue for me with wanting to know such people in reality. There are a few exceptions, which are shows I quite like, such as:

Mary Tyler Moore
Bob & Emily Newhart
James Hacker, from Yes Minister
Ted Lasso

Though they aren’t exactly my mindset, they’re likable smart well-adjusted people, whom I’d be happy to meet and hang out with a bit.

Closer might be:

Jeeves, from Jeeves and Wooster.
Roy Kent, from Ted Lasso.

Gilligan? The Professor? Mary Ann? The Skipper? - NO

Rob Petrie? - YES

Granny (on the Bev. Hillbillies)? Uncle Jed? - NO

Batman? Robin? Alfred? - Ummm . . . they’re kind of manic and insane, but otherwise ok.

Maxwell Smart? - NO The Chief? - so so Agent 99? - Eh, maybe. The writing on that show is so dumb, that if that’s part of it, NO.

@Zaku Roy Kent? You fucking fucker! (I do have a secret crush on him though.)

Fred Sanford, one of the most hilarious characters on tv. Also Red Forman and Hawkeye.

Zaku's avatar

@janbb Yeah, I fucking love Roy Kent!

@Zaku if I remember my ancient history, Mel Brooks was one of the writers on Get Smart – and he went on to great success.

Spock comes to mind for me.

@elbanditoroso When was the last time you watched an entire episode of Get Smart?

I was a fan, when I was maybe 6–7 years old. I think by about age 8, I couldn’t stand it, and was slightly disgusted (or at least, embarrassed) with myself for having liked it. I haven’t actually seen it in decades, on purpose, but my memory of it was that (the great opening door sequence notwithstanding), although it might have a few occasional good jokes from time to time, it quickly became painfully, unbearably, “why am I still watching this” dumb. I could be wrong. Maybe my 8-year-old self overreacted?

But in the case of this question, imagining 99 (to take the example I recall I found most likable) to be a real person, and relying on my memory of how dumb everything was, I remember she seemed quite likeable, and the actress I imagine, was, but if 99 were a real person, and really behaved as dumb as I remember the writing was . . . that’d be an issue for me.

Growing up, I wanted Alan Alda’s Hawkeye Pierce to be my father, for some reason.

I would love to have spent time with him, BJ, Margaret, Radar, and (even) Charles Emerson Winchester III.

Bill Cosby, because I have trouble falling asleep. I hear he has an effective remedy.
