Are Republican women talking about not liking the Barbie movie?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) August 13th, 2023 from iPhone

I’ve noticed some of my Republican female friends don’t like the Barbie movie, and I was wondering if Republicans are talking negatively about it in various social circles and the messaging is setting it up so they go in with a negative outlook.

I loved the movie. I laughed and smiled through most of it.

If you saw the movie, what were your main take aways?

This is a pretty good Q, and I have no idea if they are dissing it. Literally every single person I have mentioned it to, in person, has loved it, (but then, I probably wouldn’t mention it to Republicans.)
I loved it, and the idea that anyone is calling it “anti-men” seems just silly, and a pretty good indicator that they are A) pretty dumb or B) lying about seeing it.

I laughed a lot, and I plan to see it again.

Really, anyone politicizing this movie is just absurdly reaching for extreme stupidity.

I do wonder if they have even seen it.

@canidmajor Is that the problem? Anti-men? One woman on facebook said she didn’t like the dancing (which I loved) or how the Mattel management was portrayed. I don’t know her, so I have no idea if she is a Republican. A Republican friend of mine said she “didn’t like the message.” I didn’t ask her to explain because it’s a casual acquaintance who I never talk politics or any type of serious topics with.

My wife is a Republican and she and a very liberal female friend watched the Barbie movie yesterday.
My wife said it was silly and funny. She also told me that I would not enjoy it. She’s right. I have no interest in that sort of girly entertainment. HA!

I haven’t talked to any Republican women about the movie but I’ve read online that it is reported that conservative men are against it because they feel it has an anti-male and anti-family message.

@janbb I haven’t seen it – my daughter was going today – but I understand that Barbie is being celebrated as a feminist icon/idol because she has accomplished so much.

No doubt, that’s why they conservative men don’t like it – women, in their view, should be kept barefoot and pregnant.

janbb's avatar

@elbanditoroso No, it has more to do with the plot of the movie which ultimately shows Barbie becoming “real.”

^^ That’s the problem, NO right wing male wants a “real woman”...they prefer airheads who can’t think for themselves!!!

I haven’t seen it but miy teenage daughter saw it with her friends and they liked it. She told me in detail about the plot, and I am imagining that conservative thinkers won’t like the plot line that every woman can do what she wants and be what she wants to be, etc. It’s not traditional for women to be out in the workplace and being successful. Lots of conservative thinkers that I know feel that women should be home raising their children and not working and putting the kids in day care.

I haven’t heard much other than it’s a bit silly, I have no seen it.
Looking up reviews, I noticed Fox says they get mixed reports, same as secular reviews.

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL I think you would like it. It’s funny and very fun from a girls can do and be anything perspective. It’s silly too.

I have not seen it so I can’t comment much other than it’s probably not my thing but media like this is often a good differential test to see bias in how it’s reported. If the Right demonize it and if you see the movie yourself, the differential bias becomes plain as day. Same goes for media the left demonize. Just based on that alone, I will eventually watch it.

@JLeslie I’m torn between the obvious materialiatic corporate support and the feminism components. Maybe I should just go for ‘fun’ but overthinking is kind of my thing.
I don’t usually enjoy campy movies so we’ll see.

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL I’m not usually into campy either, so I identify with you on that. I was shocked I enjoyed it so much.

janbb's avatar

@KNOWITALL I think you would like it too. There’s things to ponder but also a lot of just fun. I was not initially drawn to go but I’m glad I did and will watch it again when it’s streaming.

Fine, but I’ll likely wait to stream, too. I’ve walked out of too many ha!
