Labor Day was always a Monday I believe but at least in the States, they moved most Federal holidays to Mondays so that people and businesses would have a three day weekend. It’s particularly annoying that they moved Martin Luther King Day to a Monday because his birthday and mine are the same day!

No, it’s NOT just Canada. I think that the only US holidays that don’t fall on a Monday are July 4, US Thanksgiving, & Christmas. Our Thanksgiving is set tp be the 4th Thursday of November. Employees were taking vacation to cover all the days from the weekend to the actual holiday which caused turmoil in the office & corporations didn’t approve, so a law was passed to move the holidays to Mondays as to regulate the days taken off…or at least that’s the bill of goods they sold us at the time the law was passed. A friend of mine who lives in Halifax says whatever we do in the US that Canada will copy shortly thereafter. I can only assume that Canada chose to follow our lead except maybe your Thanksgiving falling on the 2nd Monday in October. Both are due to the season of harvest which would be different the further north you go so it makes sense that they’re different.
