Is Mitch McConnell on his way out?

Asked by jca2 (16753points) August 30th, 2023

81 year old politician Mitch McConnell just had his second episode of “freezing up” during a press conference today. The first episode was just over a month ago.

Video here:
https://www.boston.com/news/politics/2023/08/30/video-mitch-mcconnell-appears-to-freeze-up-again-this-time-at-a-kentucky-event/

This is cut and pasted from Wikipedia, about his health:

“In August 2019, McConnell suffered a fall at his Louisville home; he fractured his shoulder. In March 2023, he was hospitalized for five days after a fall; he was treated for a concussion and a minor rib fracture, and did not return to the Senate for almost six weeks. In July 2023, he fell while disembarking from a plane at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

On July 26, 2023, McConnell prompted worldwide media reports when he froze, unspeaking, for around 20 seconds while addressing a press conference. He was escorted away by aides, but later returned and said he was “fine”. Two days after the incident, his spokespersons said that McConnell would continue in his leadership role; he is the institution’s longest-serving party leader. On August 30, 2023, he again froze during a press conference in Covington, Kentucky and was eventually led away by staff.”

Is ole’ Mitch on his way out, literally and/or figuratively?

To me it seems likely, but I’ve researched his health even less than you seem to have.

Time to pass the baton. Health should come first.

I saw the video and have heard about him. He is not well. I think he should resign.

I’ll never understand why people in this country permit people with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel to hold such high ranking offices. This is an exclusive club where people need to be in their prime, not past it. While were are on the subject, we don’t want those who are not in their prime yet to hold these offices either.

@Blackwater_Park How do suggest this be judged?

Fitness for duty and minimum age requirements. We already do this for certain important jobs.

@Zaku I researched briefly by googling. I like to post links as backup for things I post, because when people make erroneous statements on here without backup, it’s often subject to interpretation or considered to be someone’s opinion. By posting links as proof, it’s not what I’m saying, it’s there for people to asses for themselves.

Yertle has lost a lot of weight too. He is not well.

At the very least he should not run for re-election. That is what Diane Feinstein is doing.

He doesn’t look well at all, but people like that have a hard time giving up power.
