They probably thought you were wasting their time. That would seem to be something you could find online.

There is the case of Ulysses S. Grant, who had a middle initial but no middle name. He was borh as Hiram Ulysses Grant. When he went to West Point, they mistakenly listed him as Ulysses S Grant, which he liked and decided to keep, but he never came up with a name for the S.

Everyone knew LBJ was Lyndon Baines Johnson and he was succeeded by Milhouse. Gerry Ford and Jimmy Carter were the first 20th Century Presidents without a commonly used middle name. Even Warren Gamaliel Harding’s middle name was known at the time.

So the supposition in this thread is incorrect.
