How do you know when to use parchment paper or Aluminum foil when cooking in the oven?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) October 5th, 2023

I have both, and I was wondering.

I’m making two boneless beef rib fingers now with aluminum foil on a cookie sheet.

I think it’s parchment paper for baking and foil for everything else.

@smudges Thanks. I had thought that parchment paper for low heat, and aluminum foil for high heat.

I’m not positive, I just know my sister, who bakes, uses parchment paper to bake, and baking temps are sometimes 400. Someone else may be more sure.

I agree with @smudges. Parchment paper is for baking.

I rarely use parchment paper, and aluminum foil primarily under pies or on top to keep from burning edges.

Of course I have baking stones for pizza and cookies so it depends on your equipment. My stone bakeware and pie pans were worth the money.
I’d use parchment paper for crustless pizza, that’s about it and I bake a LOT. Wax paper works better for me than PP.

Wait what . . .“Wax paper works better for me than PP.”.

The wax paper will melt and make a mess in the oven !

^^ That’s what I was thinking!

@Tropical_Willie Wax paper melts at 420f, so you can use it for baking under that temp. Libbys pumpkin roll specifically says to use wax paper and it’s my most requested dessery. :)

^^ mmm…pumpkin roll!

“Wax paper and parchment paper might look similar, but they serve very different purposes in the kitchen. Wax paper has a thin coating of wax on each side, which prevents food from sticking to it and makes it moisture-resistant. But wax paper is not heat-resistant. The wax will melt at high temperatures, and the paper itself can catch on fire. Because of this, don’t use wax paper to line baking sheets or cake pans or put it in a hot oven. Here are the other ways to use wax paper and when it’s best to stick with parchment paper. ”

I use parchment paper when specified in a recipe, otherwise I use aluminum foil.

Sometimes I use parchment to keep already baked goods separated when stacking, like if I have a lot of cookies.

@Tropical_Willie I’m a wax paper rebel. Haha!
