They do, I have no idea what they taste like.
You can buy fossilized whale ribs. But you don’t eat the rib, just like you don’t eat a pork rib or a beef rib. You eat the meat on the rib.
Apparently, whale meat tastes like reindeer or moose, a strong gamey taste. Remember, whale hunting is illegal most places in the world unless one is an indigenous person.
Yes. They’re PODitively delicious.
I’ve NEVER had an opportunity to find out. Check out this info on taste & how to cook. Maybe you should save up your money & visit Japan as it’s eaten there!!!
Some countries hunt certain kinds of whales, despite the whales being on the endangered list.
My guess is that, depending on the size of the whale, a whale rib would be several feet long (for a smaller whale like an orca which is actually the largest dolphin) to maybe ten feet long or longer for a huge whale. Probably the rib itself is at least several inches in diameter, because it’s got to be strong enough to hold up the enormous weight of the animal, and to not break when diving down with the massive pressure of the deep water. Probably not too easy to cut and so not practical for the average barbecue.
@jca2 I doubt anyone has a Weber grill big enough to barbecue a whale rib. It would take a lot of sauce!
Sorry if this offends, but shame on Japan!
They do. I frequent a restaurant called Whales Rib Tavern. The owners live next to my new house.
I will ask next time.
Why am I picturing Fred Flinstone right now?
Indeed they do.
They even have bones that only land animals have. That’s how we know that used to walk, a LONG time ago!
I would think they’d taste like fish….
^ In that case they must taste like mammals.
^Well. Judging by the appearance of the flesh, it even looks like a sort of red meat.
Some people eat skates/rays wings. That meat is extremely different from fish, and it’s real dark red too.
I readily admit that I am NOT a culinary expert. I’m just guessing. I’m guessing it’s red meetish with a hint of krill…Whatever krill taste like…
I saw a documentary about whales and the whale meat industry and it said that whale meat tastes kind of like steak.
I guess we need our Japanese friends to weigh in as a Japanese whaling firm unveiled vending machines offering whale sashimi, whale steak and whale bacon in Yokohama in hopes of reviving sales of a food long in decline and shunned by many supermarkets.
That is abhorrent and sickens and saddens me.
^Overdoing it, is the issue. Humans have to eat, so we have to kill things.
Greedily hunting animals to extinction is another thing.
I think the saddest thing about killing whales is that they can live to be so old. There’s something extra shitty about killing an animal like that. And it’s obvious whales are amazing, intelligent, and gentle creatures.
