Is there any chance that Democrats would support a Republican running for House Speaker?

Asked by LostInParadise (32215points) October 22nd, 2023

The going assumption is that no Democrats would support a Republican. I am guessing that members of the minority party rarely, if ever, support a Speaker candidate from the majority party. The problem is that there is a small number of MAGA conservatives who seem to be unwilling to make any compromises. Might there be a moderate Republican who would be willing to make a deal to get at least some Democratic votes?

You have it flipped. Republicans won’t accept a speaker that has support from Democrats.

Dems would support a republican if that republican weren’t an election denying Trumpie, and if it were someone who wasn’t crazy right wing, but someone moderate who would make middle-of-the road decisions.

And it would have to be someone who would keep their word.

The problem is that republicans eat their own- anyone who is moderate and willing to govern gets clobbered by the right-wing loonies.

I think they would if a reasonable Republican candidate could be found. Jamie Raskin (D) named two or three in a recent interview.

In addition to above, the dems can’t help the GOP.
That would be socialism…

The Democrats will support any person running for the office of Speaker of the House as long as they are genuinely willing to work with Democrats. Sadly, it is unlikely that Republicans would support anyone willing to work with Democrats.

They should use it as an opportunity to extract their pound of flesh, to pass something the American people need, like an increase in the minimum wage.

Yes, there is a chance. You need a candidate offered up who has some integrity and who isn’t an extremist or stupid.

Heck no. They want to continue with this Republican Comedy Show.

The Freedom Caucus ( Tea Party ) wants the House to fail to pass any bills and the country to default on paying bills . . . and their logic is they will blame Biden (cause he won) then they can put the Tangerine Turd in the White House . . .FOREVER !

Simply, they want the country to fail and they don’t care . . .some of them want jobs on Fox Network . . . the pay is better!

No. The Dems and Repubs are so divided it makes it impossible for them to meet anywhere in the middle. And when they do, there is suspicion and distrust.

I recall something about a snowball chance in hell.

I think if they pick someone who is a moderate they would vote for a reasonable person who wants to actually work for the people and not be led by the nose by the Freedom Caucus. There would be no point in them voting to help someone like Jordan that would only disrupt everything. Jordan only recently has started to author bills and it was probably because this was in the works. But the man hasn’t passed a single bill in all his years in office. How can anyone choose someone to lead who has never even tried to lead until recently? I kind of wish they would choose Liz Cheney even though she’s not in office anymore. I do not agree with her politics but at the very least she seems sane and willing to work for the people of the Nation.
@Tropical_Willie You are right. It seems a lot of them may be vying to work at Fox.

They have literally no reason to do that. No way it would happen.

As I said above, they will if a reasonable candidate is proposed (aye, there’s the rub!.) Here’s their conditions according to Hakeem Jeffries in a piece by Heather Coxe Richardson:

“House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has offered a bipartisan deal in which Democrats would help Republicans elect a speaker. In exchange for their help, Democrats have said they want a candidate who is not an election denier and who agrees to hold up-or-down votes for bills that have broad support across the parties. Such a deal would mean some security for future elections. It would also mean that a measure funding Ukraine, which is popular across Congress but which the extremists oppose, would get a hearing.

So would funding the government.”

It is nice to see that the Democrats are at least making an offer. If the Republicans continue to fail at electing a Speaker on their own, maybe a few moderates will consider it.

Caravanfan's avatar

Deed is done. A hard core election denier is now speaker.

Watching him now giving a speech on the house floor.

Caravanfan's avatar

@JLeslie I’m at work. What is he saying?

elbanditoroso's avatar

They still have to pass a budget in 2 weeks, and they still won’t be able to do it with all republicans. So the question is: Is this guy going to close down the government or deal with the Dems?

JLeslie's avatar

@Caravanfan I barely remember now. When I started watching he was talking about God. He mentioned supporting Israel. He mentioned something about separating or decentralizing powers. I don’t remember exactly. Sorry, I had my husband asking me some questions during it.

Caravanfan's avatar

@JLeslie Oh, if he was talking about God I’m sure he’ll be a good Speaker of the House. He’s guided by God, after all.
