Not really “horror” movies, but…
Aliens
Gone Girl
and…probably a documentary about a serial killer.

Honorable Mention: Marvel’s Werewolf by Night

“Trick R Treat” is one we watch every year now
Cabin in the woods is another that’s fun on Halloween.
Just watched “Green Room”. It’s not horror but it was quite a thrill ride.

Just watched Ghost Ship. Pretty good scary type movie.
I also liked Room 1408. Kinda quirky.

Great question!

I’m a wuss when it comes to horror. My dad showed me Gremlins WAY too early and I had nightmares for a long time (and never fully trusted my teddy bear after that). So when it comes to horror, I’m not a “hater” but I can’t handle the extreme stuff. My three would be: “The Shining,” “Tremors” and “What Lies Beneath.”

As a bonus, it’s not horror, but “Ghostbusters” is perfectly thematic and would make an awesome “cherry-on-top” 4th film.

Horror that’s really disturbing that others may love: Saw films, Hostel, The Ring, The Cell, Thirteen Ghosts, Arachnophobia

The most horror I can handle is comedy horror (such as Ghost Busters), and I had more than enough of that the first time I saw it. I recommend Spaced Invaders. It’s chock full of slapstick, double entendres, and just plain fun. I can’t recommend another movie.

Comedy horror favorites include:
Tucker and Dale versus Evil
The Stuff
Young Frankenstein

Or, a trilogy of films that freaked me out long ago:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
The Fury
Alien

Or, sci-fi monster action horror:
Aliens
Predator
The Thing (1982)

Or, good films:
Jaws
The Shining
Duel (1971)

@ragingloli Boss Baby. I’m laughing.

@chyna I forgot about Ghost Ship! That has the best beginning to a horror movie in my opinion. I’ll have to put that on my list.

mazingerz88's avatar

@chyna I own a copy of Ghost Ship. Another decent ocean liner horror film is Deep Rising, no ghosts but a monster instead.

mazingerz88's avatar

Another good film with ghosts…Kate Beckinsale and Aidan Quinn in “Haunted”.

@chyna Another ocean vessel horror film, no ghosts, no monsters…something else. :)

I’m going to have to see that one. I love Jamie Lee Curtis!

jca2's avatar

@chyna Have you ever seen the movie “Terror Train?” It’s a Jamie Lee Curtis one from the early 80s. I remember thinking it was very scary and a good story when I saw it in the theater.

jonsblond's avatar

@jca2 We were looking for Terror Train to stream last weekend but couldn’t find it. I haven’t seen it so I was really looking forward to it.

@jonsblond Check YouTube. I just went there to see if it’s there and I found it, one hour, thirty seven minutes. It said “sign in to show your age” and I didn’t, so I didn’t go beyond that, but check there.

Oh, a good selection of the classics, for sure; e.g.:

Frankenstein, with Boris Karloff (1931)
Dracula, with Bela Lugosi and that marvelous guy who played Renfield—I don’t think I ever saw him in anything else (1941)
The Wolfman, with Lon Chaney (1941)

I love the good old-fashioned black-and-white creepers with their horror and tragedy, their primitive special effects, and their doomed heroes—ridiculous endings and all. I have a whole collection of them on DVD. I used to let my kids stay up as late as they wanted one night in the summer, and we would make popcorn and watch these very tame, innocent scary movies, which I always vetted first.

If those aren’t long enough to keep me watching for a day, I’d add these:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
and
I Walked with a Zombie (1943)

For real shivers, though, give me stories like the ones in Bennett Cerf’s Famous Ghost Stories (1944). When the story takes place within the privacy of your mind rather than “out there” on a screen, the scares seem to deliver a greater thrill of horror.

Jeruba's avatar

There’s a reason why there were so many of these ^^ coming out during wartime. I predict another spate of monster movies over the next year.

chyna's avatar

My neighbor, his wife and I have a Halloween tradition of sitting on their deck near Halloween and watch a scary movie. He puts up a screen and has all the stuff to watch a movie outside. We have a couple of drinks, popcorn, and the movie. This years movie was Ghostship. What makes it even scarier is that they live beside a grave yard. Que Boris Karloff laughter!

gorillapaws's avatar

Oh, “48 Days Later” would make the cut. It would replace “Tremors” on my list.

Blackwater_Park's avatar

A good ocean going thriller is Dead Calm.

mazingerz88's avatar

^^Starred Billy “In-zane” :)

Jeruba's avatar

How could I forget The Mummy, with Boris Karloff (1932)?

Did you know that Boris Karloff’s name at birth was William Henry Pratt?

jonsblond's avatar

@chyna what a fun tradition!

jonsblond's avatar

Dead Calm was one of Nicole Kidman’s first movies. Also starring Sam Neill. What a great movie!

LifeQuestioner's avatar

I’m not into slasher films at all. But I would probably watch one of the Alien movies, Arachnophobia, and Superdeep, which if you never heard of it is a really freaky movie based on cordyceps taking over people.
