Do you ever make yourself look ridiculous for fun?

Asked by janbb (63218points) October 28th, 2023

I’m going to a play reading party this afternoon in which I play an air-head of an actress. I’m thinking of Phoebe from Friends and I’m dressing a bit like a Swiftie in shorts, sexy top, pink boots and a velvet jacket.

Tomorrow I’m dressing as the Mad Hatter for a teddy bear tea party that a friend and I are doing for our congregation’s trunk or treat.

I have to say it’s a little uncomfortable for me to be silly.

I am barely five feet tall, round, clumsy and I dress in an amusing fashion. Ridiculous is my style. ;-)

Not usually. I like to slip by in life unnoticed.
But I love when others do it! I wish I could be like that. Just let my hair down and be silly.

I’m a drag queen… It’s part of the schtick.

@chyna I’m with you. This is a reach today. I’ll be more comfortable tomorrow in the Meeting House although all the people at the party are from UU.

@canidmajor Do you ever dress to not look ridiculous? lol

We don’t dress up but my husband and I will sometimes use different accents and pretend we’re from a different part of the country or world. My husband is better at it then I am but I play along. He once had a patron at a bar believe he was from England, then when the patron asked where he grew up he said Alabama.

We sometimes use the voices of the characters Early and Adele from the movie Kalifornia. We talk loud enough for people near us to hear and we get strange looks. It’s funny to us.

Recently we were standing on our deck. It faces a busy street with a few bars and lots of pedestrians. One drunk man stopped to chat with us. He talked our ear off and mentioned how he always forgets names. I took the bait and introduced myself, knowing he’d probably never remember the moment. I told him my name was Karen. He believed me and joked about how hard it would be to have that name right now. My husband said his name was Felix and then whistled the theme to The Odd Couple.

These things are so easy for my husband to do. Me, not so much. Once I started to get over my fear I began to have fun. I try to make sure when we role play that we do it where we’ll most likely never see these people again.

For Halloween? You bet! Look at my avatar to see what I do. Other than that I don’t try to make myself look ridiculous but I tend to have a God-given gift for that.

<——- Yes- I’ve been doing that ever since I was a baby! ;)

I have several avatars that I created just for that reason.

Like @chyna I like to slip by unnoticed in life. I don’t like to draw attention to myself and if I look ridiculous it isn’t intentional

Very rare.

I probably wouldn’t mind playing an airhead for a skit though.

janbb's avatar

@JLeslie It was a lot of fun actually.

I don’t intentionally appear physically ridiculous, but I’ll laugh at myself in a heartbeat and relate funny stories. I love making people laugh, always have.

Pics or it never happened.

I would do the reading and I could handle it, and it would be fun. As far as looking goofy, would probably tend to be self conscious about it, so I wouldn’t do it.

We used to have a jelly with a name something like mevans who once described wearing headgear to work that made it look like he had a chicken on his head. He was bemused by the people on the elevator who pretended not to notice.

I would never have his nerve. Fear of losing my dignity has inhibited me all my life, notwithstanding how that attitude in itself can do violence to your precious dignity.

janbb's avatar

@Jeruba I think it was “mowens.”

Back in the KN-95 days of Covid (pre-vaccine), you needed a tight seal against the face. This required shaving my beard. I went through several ridiculous beard/mustache styles before finally getting a complete shave. My wife and I had fun with that.
