What state did Jed and Granny and the family live in before they moved to Beverly Hills?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33577points) October 29th, 2023

We know he was a ‘poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed’.

But once they found oil, they ‘loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly…’.

But from where?

I found three places – Arkansas, Silver Dollar City, Missouri, and Limestone, Tennessee. Silver Dollar City doesn’t seem like a true contender since it’s supposedly a city.

The first two seem most likely since they were from the Ozarks, and the Ozarks aren’t in TN.

However, it was revealed in an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies that the Clampetts hail from Limestone, TN

So it seems debatable. But I seem to remember a place called “Bugtussle” (sp?), Kentucky.

Jed and Elly Clampett lived close to Bug Tussle near Branson, Mo. Granny who was Jeds mother in-law, moved from Tennessee to live with Jed and Elly. Pearl and Jethro Bodine lived a short distance from the Clampetts in Arkansas. The old truck sits in a museum at Point Lookout, Mo. just south of Branson.
Various towns and locations in both the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks are mentioned in many episodes.
Back Story:
Early in Season 1, the Clampetts headed home to the mountains for a multi-episode visit. Mr. Drysdale feared the Clampetts might decide to stay in the mountains and take their money with them. Once again Mr. Drysdale drove himself to madness making sure this didn’t happen.
But something else happened during the Clampetts’ visit home. It was revealed that the hills where the Clampetts were originally from were very close to a little town called Hooterville which also happened to be the setting for two other shows produced by the same people.
When the Beverly Hillbillies came home to visit, Sam Drucker was of utmost concern to Mr. Drysdale since he also ran what passed for the town bank – he was Drysdale’s competition! He wasn’t much competition but like I said, money made Mr. Drysdale crazy and paranoid.
So 3 shows came out of this one set of writers. Petticoat Junction, Beverly Hillbillies and the opposite to BH was Green Acres.

So Silver Dollar City, Mo (Branson, Mo) is a theme park, not a real city. While Missouri does have oil closer to the surface, the whole scenario is pure folly/story.
The whole shtick is a replica of a frontier town that they’ve grown into a huge money-making vacation destination.

I think it was Arkansas.

Huh. I “remembered ” that Tennessee was mentioned in the theme song. But nope.

“The Ballad of Jed Clampett”

Written by Paul Henning / Music by Flatt and Scruggs / Sung by Jerry Scoggins

Come and listen to my story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed.
And then one day he was shootin’ at some food,
And up through the ground come a-bubblin’ crude.
Oil, that is. Black gold. Texas tea.

Well, the first thing you know ol’ Jed’s a millionaire,
The kinfolk said “Jed, move away from there!”
Said, “Californy is the place you ought to be,”
So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly
Hills, that is. Swimmin’ pools, movie stars.

Well, now it’s time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin.
And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin’ in.
You’re all invited back next week to this locality
To have a heapin’ helpin’ of their hospitality.
Hillbilly, that is. Set a spell. Take your shoes off.
Y’all come back now, y’hear?
