Are urban areas more likely to have negative feelings towards Jews?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29896points) November 1st, 2023

In my state, our urban areas have many Muslims who are upset about the war in Israel. Violence is increasing as well.

Have you noticed that in your urban areas? Specifically I was told the black community is afraid to discuss their feelings openly, due to high emotion and fear of reprisal, if they defend Jews/Israel.

Many people are upset about the war because it is the innocent who are suffering. You don’t have to be Jewish or Muslim or Christian to feel upset about this.

I don’t think you can make that assumption, if for no other reason than urban areas come in all ethnicities.

Take NYC – about as urban as you can get, but strongly Jewish and therefore welcoming to Jews.

Boston, parts of Chicago, are also heavily urban and strongly Jewish supportive.

I’m trying to think of some rule/trend that I could apply to your question, and I am not seeing anything that I would consider consistent. I don’t think it’s there.

About the only strong correlation I can see is in certain areas of Detroit – which is a very Arab city – and certain areas in and around Minneapolis – where there are large concentrations of Somali muslims – which would be negative to Jews.

Other than those to areas, anti-semitism is low-grade and exists, but not in large groups.

There are white trash enclaves everywhere.

Let me rephrase. Several of my black friends are very leery of expressing any Pro-Israel sentiment for fear of reprisal in KC and St Louis both. My (white) family in those areas have felt none of that.
Do any of you live in urban areas that have heard this as well?

Yes, absolutely. As well as Muslims.

I live in a very rural are, and I have seen and heard things that confirm it here.

@filmfann Interesting and surprising.

It makes sense as many in the black community embrace(d) Islam. I just always think trashy whites don’t like Jews, so it surprised me to hear these big guys literally scared to say they favored Israel.

I think most antisemites are your straight up Nazis. They vote Republican, eat lead paint chips and fuck animals in the fields at night as well as their siblings.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@gorillapaws hmmm…you must have weird friends haha!

Caravanfan's avatar

@gorillapaws that’s just not true. Many antisemitic incidences are being originated by the far left.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@Caravanfan makes a good point. I remember a discussion back in college (many years ago) that pretty much concluded that once you get to the extreme right and the extreme left, there is no real difference between them. Extremists sort of blend together.

@Caravanfan I would argue that this is what Antisemitism looks like. It’s what we should all oppose and those are the guys with guns who are going to shoot up Synagogues. People who are rallying in large numbers on the left to oppose Netanyahu in solidarity with the people being ethnically cleansed are non-violent and opposing crimes against humanity. I would argue that people who support Israel’s war crimes are actually doing more to hurt the long term security and prosperity of Jews all over the world. That’s why so many Jews oppose what’s happening.

gorillapaws's avatar

@Caravanfan People on the left don’t support that kind of evil shit.

filmfann's avatar

@Caravanfan Those on the left are anti-war and pro two state solution. This puts them at odds with both Israel and those in Gaza. Don’t confuse that with being antisemitic.

Caravanfan's avatar

@filmfann don’t patronize me. I know antisemitism when I see it. If you don’t see how those two links show antisemitism then you are part of the problem

Caravanfan's avatar

@gorillapaws. What don’t they support? They don’t support painting graffiti in front of a Jewish deli because (checks notes) it’s a Jewish deli?

Caravanfan's avatar

@filmfann And tell me. Why did they put graffiti in front of a Jewish deli? Why not a mosque? Why not a grocery store? Why specifically a Jewish deli? This is not a trick question.

gorillapaws's avatar

@Caravanfan Anyone willing to terrorize another based on their ethnicity, faith or nationality isn’t on the left, no matter what they, themselves claim. Those people are tribalist antisemitic pieces of shit. People on the left support Palestinian civilians precisely because we value them as humans who are all equal and deserving of common human rights like all Jews, Sikhs, Christians, Kurds, Mayans, etc. People on the left DO NOT see someone spray painting another person’s property with text that opposes the inhabitants’ race/nationality/faith/gender/etc and think to ourselves: “good job!” That’s completely antithetical to everything the left stands for.

Caravanfan's avatar

@gorillapaws and yet there they are.

Nevertheless the answer to the question is yes, there is an increase in antisemitism in urban areas.

My wife told me today she was afraid to go to a local synagogue to see a music concert.
