Is anyone else getting bombarded with Facebook messenger requests?

Asked by filmfann (52487points) November 10th, 2023

“Hi, my name is Wendy!”
“Hi, my name is Niki!”
“Hi, my name is Emma!”

All day people are fishing for me with this crap.
This isn’t a result of going on porn sites. I’ve been good.

No, I’m not. I think I have my privacy set up so that no one can message me unless they’re a friend.

No.

I can tell you what i do to minimize any problems with FB, in case you’re looking to minimize problems in the future. I have all of my settings on “Friends only” so only friends can see my photos, etc. My friends’ list is set to “private” so nobody can see my friends’ list. I try very hard not to comment on public posts, meaning groups that are set to “public” and not “private.” If someone sends me a friend request and I don’t know them, I will take a look at their profile just to double check it’s not someone with mutual friends or someone who may be legit and then since it’s usually not (usually it will be a photo of a handsome man and his relationship info will say “divorced” or “widowed” or “single” which is a clue it’s fake), I will not only delete the request but I will block that person so they can never send me another friend request again. I never play games like “Jca2, what color is your aura” or “Jca2, which vacation house best suits you” or “what foods would you never eat” even if they’re posted by friends. I also never do those copy and paste things (“copy and paste this post to your wall”).

@janbb When people tell me they have problems with FB, it seems like 99% of the time it’s because they do all these things which they think are cute or fun but are really ways to put themselves out there in the FB universe, bait for scammers.

Look out for cryptocurrency scams, esp. crypto-rom scams where the “pretty girl” romances you to send your Bitcoin to some obscure exchange for “risk-free” gains.

One more FB suggestion that I just thought of – I don’t use my actual photo as my profile photo, since your profile photo is always set to “public.” My profile photo will be an animal, or some pretty landscape or a holiday picture. That way, nobody can take my photo and duplicate it and make a fake profile out of it.
