Can I substitute mayonnaise for tartar sauce? For English cut breaded cod sticks?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) November 24th, 2023

I’m running low on tartar sauce.

For English cut breaded cod.

Also what else can I use?

I have plum sauce.

Just as a dip? Sure. If you have some pickle relish and a little Tabasco, you can put it in the mayonnaise and you’ll have close to tartar sauce.

@janbb Yes. I have relish. I already ate earlier, so we will have to wait till next time. I will update next time.

Sure.

My husband likes ketchup with his fish sticks.

I make my own “sauce” using mayo and dill. I like it better than tartar sauce.

Sure, why not?

Think of it this way: your breaded cod fish sticks are bland with hardly any flavor. Any sauce you add to them will add flavor.

I would add something sour, probably lemon to the mayo to give it the tanginess.

@gorillapaws I have some Navel oranges. I will try one next time.

You can also mix some olive oil and garlic into the mayonnaise.
For some inexplicable reason, that turns it into “aioli”.

@RedDeerGuy1 I’m not sure about how well orange juice would work with Mayo and fish. Maybe the zest from the orange might be ok? I’d make a small amount to start and taste it before committing to a large batch.

I never buy tartar sauce. I make my own using mayo, pickle relish, and a squirt of lemon juice – a little tabasco if I have it. I like mine much better because there’s never enough relish in most tartar sauce to satisfy me. Don’t waste your money on “tartar sauce”, which is essentially the same thing. I wouldn’t add orange to it – juice or zest.

If you think you’d like it, then sure!

I add dill relish to 365 (Whole Foods brand) mayo to make my own tartar sauce.

p.s. I use sweet relish. You could try both sweet and dill and see which you like better.

I always make my own tarter sauce as the store bought that I can find have sweet relish, which neither of us likes. Mayo, dill relish, and a bit of celery salt. If we’re out of dill relish, I use some dill pickle juice.

If you’re making your own, horseradish with mayo will work as well.

In a hurry the other night, I just plopped some sweet pickle relish into a small dish of mayonnaise.

I got this from AllRecipes.com and have used it before:

Simple Tartar Sauce

Basic recipe makes 1 cup, or 6 servings (modified: 2 servings)

1 cup (⅓ cup) mayonnaise
1 tablespoon (1 tsp) sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon minced onion
2 tablespoons (2 tsp) lemon juice (optional) (start with 1, and taste it)
salt and pepper to taste

• PREP: 10 min.
• READY IN 1 hr 10 min.

Directions

In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, and minced onion. Stir in lemon juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Compliments deep-fried seafood and fish.

You can substitute any food for any other food as long as you enjoy it.

I found a unopened container of Heinz tartar sauce.

Will try some tartar sauce and plum sauce and sweet relish.

Cooking 5 breaded cod fish sticks.

Will update on how it tastes.

Update only the tartar sauce was ok. Plum, and relish not appealing. Thanks for the advice.
