Any recommendations for diaspora fiction?

Asked by canidmajor (21626points) December 10th, 2023

I really enjoy diaspora fiction, I have read some terrific stuff over the years from Joy Luck Club to The Namesake, and lately Cleeton’s displaced Cuban stories and Pari’s In The Time Of Our History.

I prefer the ones about communities in the fairly modern (20th and 21st centuries) United States, and the different priorities and foci of the generations, but I will be delighted to explore other times, other places.

Tell me what I should look into!

Thanks

« The Buddha in the Attic » by Julie Otsuka is a wonderful novel about the Japanese in California.

I realize you’re probably looking for books that someone has read and can recommend, but when I looked up “What is diaspora fiction” I got a couple of reading lists if you’re interested in checking them out. The first one claims to list 8 Essential Diasporic Novels. Sorry I can’t recommend any specific books.

ETA, After a quick perusal of these lists, I am even more encouraged!

Oh, I love me list to check out! I read My Antonia in school…a loooong time ago. Worth a reread, I take it?

I love See, I have read everything from Snowflower on, and I have the mysteries in the TBR pile.

Jews Without Money by Michael Gold. An old classic from a socialist author.

How about The Golem and the Jinni, by Helene Wecker?

^^^ I loved that! I never really thought of it as diaspora fiction, but I guess it kind of is.
Have you read The Hidden Palace by Wecker? It’s set in the same world, I have it in my TBR pile.
