What is mac short for? (please read details).
Macaroni and cheese is shortened to “mac”.
Is that an abbreviation of macaroni? or is it an acronym for macaroni and cheese?
I need the definitive answer.

Here it stands for Macaroni. Originally it was shortened to mac & cheese & then on down to just mac.
Macaroni only. I hope you won the bet.
“Mac” only. It’s mac and cheese for macaroni and cheese.
Actually the inventor of Macaroni was an Italian guy – Marcello Antonio Caroni. The Caroni family was related to Italian royalty in the late 1700s. (The name Caroni means ‘crown’ – it is etmyologically similar to Corona or Coronation).
Anyway, the family wanted to honor Marcello and his achievement, so they named macaroni after him, using his initials.
MACaroni.
@elbanditoroso and “made in China” is actually l a German phrase, which has its origin in a maggot that travelled the world, and wanted to let its family back home know where it has arrived.
Hence “Made in China” (maggot in china).
If “mac” was short for “macaroni and cheese” then the phrase “mac and cheese” would be redundant, meaning “macaroni and cheese and cheese.” I always took “mac” to be short for “macaroni.”
@Tropical_Willie I know! The NY Times had a recipe that I made a few months ago, but it had three types of cheese which added up to about 15 dollars when I paid for it all. That was a little more elaborate than I wanted or needed.
