General Question

Did you get the notice from Prime that they will now be interjecting advertisments into their content?

Asked by janbb (63218points) December 26th, 2023

But wait – there’s more! You can pay more for Prime without commercials.

They have us by the short and curlies – and then they twist. I will probably not cancel yet but it is rather annoying.

Well, my stuff has been arriving beat to hell and late. I am cancelling.

If they sent it to me, I missed it. I’m NOT surprised. Netflix started it & all the others are jumping on the bandwagon. I have too much tied up in my prime to cancel, Since I cut the cord, I’ve been watching ads on most of the free channels. I treat them like noisy children & tune them out until they get quiet again!!! I don’t find them that annoying.

Prime does not pay. Anymore

I’ve been considering cancelling my membership for a few months to see how I do without it. I know I can still order things from them and they used to have free shipping with a 25 dollar minimum. I don’t know if they still have that but it was very do-able before I became a Prime member about 10 years ago. I might try to go back to that. Honestly I don’t watch too much of their videos. I have Hulu and Disney Plus and Netflix and HBO so I don’t think I’d miss Prime Video too much.

I agree they’re just so greedy.

^They’ve raised the minimum for free shipping to $35. Then when you get to the checkout, it defaults to paid shipping, and you have to manually choose free shipping, while avoiding the free shipping option that makes you join Prime. I don’t buy too much from Amazon anymore, but there are a few things they have that are ridiculously expensive on other sites.

Yeah, I just busted up laughing.

Zaku's avatar

No, but I did just cancel my free trial to Prime.

I don’t remember getting any notification about this but I like Prime and so far it has been a very good deal for me with free shipping and a choice of interesting programmes available for free.
I don’t mind adverts on Amazon when I am buying something as the adverts are generally relevant to what I am interested in but putting adverts on films could be a deal breaker.

janbb's avatar

The adverts will be on the streaming service @flutherother. I’m not sure what I’ll do.

I just got the email this morning at 10 a.m. (Wednesday). I see they have an ad free version for 2.99 extra.

Here’s the cut and paste:

We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.

Prime is a very compelling value. Prime members enjoy a wide range of shopping, savings, and entertainment benefits, including:

More than 300 million items are available with free Prime shipping and tens of millions of the most popular items are available with free Same-Day or One-Day Delivery.
Access to exclusive and broad streaming video content (including Prime Video exclusives like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Boys, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Citadel, The Wheel of Time, Reacher, and The Summer I Turned Pretty, as well as blockbuster movies such as Air, Creed III, Dungeons & Dragons, Candy Cane Lane with Eddie Murphy, and exclusive live sports including NFL Thursday Night Football).
Access to Prime Video Channels, which provides an unmatched selection of subscription channels like Max, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, BET+, MGM+, ViX+, Crunchyroll, PBS KIDS, NBA League Pass, MLB.TV, and STARZ—with no extra apps to download, and no cable required. Customers only pay for the ones they want, and can cancel anytime.
The ability to use your Prime shopping benefits—like fast, free delivery, a seamless checkout experience, 24/7 live chat support, and hassle-free returns—on online stores beyond Amazon.com with Buy with Prime.
Exclusive deals and shopping events like Prime Day.
Ad-free listening of 100 million songs and millions of podcast episodes with Amazon Music.
Prescription medications as low as $1 per month and fast, free shipping from Amazon Pharmacy.
Access to unlimited eligible generic prescription medications for only $5 per month (including free shipping) with RxPass from Amazon Pharmacy.
High-quality health care from One Medical for only $9 per month (or $99 annually), with the option to add up to five additional memberships for the family for only $6 per month (or $66 annually) each.
Free two-hour Fresh grocery delivery on orders over $100 (and delivery charges between $6.95 to $9.95 for orders less than $100), and in-store savings on select groceries at Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market stores across the U.S.
Unlimited photo storage with Amazon Photos.
Gaming benefits with Prime Gaming.
More than 3,000 books and magazines with Prime Reading.
A free, one-year Grubhub+ membership trial valued at $120 per year, offering unlimited $0 delivery fees on orders over $12.

And, you can expect additional features and programs added in the future for our Prime members.

As mentioned above, no action is required from you. If you wish to sign up for the ad-free option, you can click here. And, as always, if you have questions about your Prime membership, you can manage your account here.

Thank you for being a valued member of Amazon Prime.

Sincerely,
The Amazon Prime team

*Live event content such as sports, and content offered through Amazon Freevee will continue to include advertising

Yes. I signed up for the $3.00 additional fee to avoid advertising.

I think they would have been smarter to offer the Prime with ads at a slight discount rather than make you pay more for what you already have. I have Hulu with ads for $2.00 less per month than without it.

JeSuisRickSpringfield's avatar

I canceled two months ago. Looks like I was just in time!

ragingloli's avatar

I am not using amazon to watch things, so it does not really affect me.

Caravanfan's avatar

@ragingloli No big loss. There are few Prime shows that are really worthwhile.

mazingerz88's avatar

Amazon should give the option to not get ads if you don’t watch any of the stuff they produced. The only Amazon produced shows I enjoyed were Lost Boys Season 1 and 2 and Reacher. Their Lord of the Rings is a total piece of crap. Lol

While I know it can’t fully replace the subscription services, my family has started using Emby to replicate the streaming experience. It’s a free program that lets you load all of your digital media onto a server and access it through your television using the same kind of interface as the paid services. It’s basically a way of creating your own local Netflix or Prime or whatever.

When you compare the cost of these services to the cost of occasionally buying a DVD to add it to your collection, it comes out looking pretty good. You can’t get anything that is exclusive to any of the subscription services (unless you’re willing to sail the seven seas). But in our experience, it matches or exceeds the convenience of online streaming.

There’s also an open-source fork of Emby called Jellyfin, which seems appropriate to mention here.

I received an email about this yesterday. I will have to pay £2.99 a month for ad free films. I’m not going to pay it and I will reappraise after 6 months or so. £2.99 is a good bit more than $2.99. I may end up cancelling the whole shebang.
