If you have a holiday tree up, do you take it down on a specific date, just whenever, or at all?

Asked by canidmajor (21581points) December 29th, 2023

When I was growing up, my mom and dad couldn’t agree on what was Twelfth Night, (Mom said Jan 6, Dad said Jan 12) so we were squiffy about all that. Mostly since then I’ve been doing it whenever, but for the last few years I’ve left the little table-top tree up year round (my living room is gloomy) and changed out the lights and decorations.

You?

I take it down after Epiphany (January 6).

Your dad was wrong, 12th night is January 6.

Growing up, our tree was always taken down on January 1st. My mom would often take other decorations down on the 26th, but the tree and the outside lights would stay until New Year’s Day. That’s a tradition I’ve kept. My boyfriend and I put up a tree and it will come down on the 1st.

My family had a plastic tree, that was assembled sometime during december, decorated with the tinsel from previous years, and then stowed away at some time after christmas. No specific dates. I do not have one. Too much hassle, and too little space.

I thought Twelfth Night was the 5th January, anyway mine will be coming down before then.

I’ve already taken mine down. I had the time and energy. I suppose it’s supposed to stay up till Epiphany, but I don’t care.

The whenevereth of whatevereth month.

Usually based on when it starts seeming like an issue of some kind. e.g. it’s getting dry, or there’s free collection of it only up to a certain date, or someone is bothered by it.

Sometime after New Year’s but before Valentine’s Day.

In time so as not to miss tree pickup service by the garbage man!

We missed it one year and had to ask a neighbor for a handsaw to hack it into small enough pieces to fit the compost bin. What a PITA.

I didn’t take down my lights as planned. I’m still enjoying them. I, since first hung, I have never taken them down, but I unplug them eventually.
