Has your tv watching ever made your mother question the sanity of her children?

Well she doesn’t relate to most US television, understandably. But I think her judgement extended mainly just to saying she didn’t understand it, saying IT was crazy, and that it was really loud.

The one thing I remember her asking me to at least turn down the volume of, was The Flintstones, saying that they were screaming all the time . . . which, I noticed, she was quite right about.

Mom ruled the TV with an iron fist. She would watch whatever she wanted, but didn’t let us watch just anything.

There was one show my son was watching when he was about 20 – the one with Denis Leary as a fireman. My son told me, “you probably want to leave the room” so I did. Many things, like “The Simpsons” we all enjoyed together.

When I was a kid, there was nothing on that would offend anyone.

One evening towards the end of 1971 the BBC broadcast a session with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. I was very keen to watch it as I was a big fan and I think my mother was curious to find out my musical tastes.

They were a strange looking bunch of musicians to say the least and they opened the session with a discordant jumble of noise which developed into some lovely original music after a few minutes but by then my mother had left the room, closing the door with a bang.

My Mother was never around and certainly never watched TV with her 3 kids. She didn’t have time for TV watching. She was either gone (at one of her jobs) or sleeping.

Perhaps not TV, but back in the 80s at the height of the satanic panic, my parents were quite concerned with my musical tastes. Whatever was on TV was fine though. My wife and I both grew up watching all the classic horror movies from the 70’s and 80’s.

Not exactly, but I once tried to explain the plot of Stargate SG-1 to my elderly mother and uncle…and felt like a moron as the words left my mouth. I mean…great show…but the premise does not sound good out of context.

Do you remember what Season# and what Episode# “Home” was?
I might be able to find it with just the Season#.

I searched IMDb for TV episodes titled “Home”, but I couldn’t find any for X Files.

Not a specific show. But I’m sure it’s some law of the universe that your parents will walk by during the one R-rated scene in the entire movie.

I also question my children’s sanity when I watch some of the drivel they watch on YouTube these days.

The last time I lived with my parents was about 50 years ago, when our TV viewing choices were quite limited.

If my mother saw me watching something like “Home”, I think she would have watched at least some of it with me. She took us to some horror movies before we were teenagers, and those were usually her choices.

However, if I told her something like, “Inbreeding looks like it would be a great idea!”, she would have certainly thought I needed some serious counseling.

In summation, I don’t think my mother ever thought I was crazy for merely watching anything on TV.
