Who do you think won the Republican debate in Iowa?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) January 10th, 2024 from iPhone

Not just who won, but also who do you think will come in first, second, and third in Iowa?

There was a Republican debate in Iowa?

Well, there were only two participants. I’d give Nikki the edge.

Are you just asking about the debate, or are you also calling for predictions on the Republican primary?

Jeruba's avatar

[Later] Hmm, commentators who actually watched the whole thing thought it was DeSantis’s night, so I dont know.

@Jeruba Asking about both the debate and who you think will win the primary and come in second and third. I’m guessing Trump doesn’t win as predicted, but I think my guess means nothing.

I thought Republicans would think Nikki did better, I thought she did very well, but just before I fell asleep last night I saw a few commentators saying DeSantis, and I was kind of surprised. I was so tired I had my eyes closed, I don’t even know if it was Democrats or Republicans making those comments.

All along I’ve said I think DeSantis will do well in some states, but I have no guess about Iowa. I think he gets very nervous before the debates and he gets stiff and artificial looking while Nikki looks calm and self assured. I think Nikki insulted Iowans a few weeks ago, and that might really hurt her.

@Caravanfan Last night. Just Nikki and DeSantis. They went after each other. They covered a lot of topics. It was pretty good though, they answered a lot of Q’s and mostly stayed on topic.

Trump won by not being there.

NY Times said DeSantis won and someone said if he did this well with debates from the beginning, he’d be the front runner.

@jca2 DeSantis cooked his own goose by being so anti-woke from the beginning. It’s almost as if he had to recant some of that to be taken seriously.

If I were a Florida resident, I would be pissed off that he wasted so much time on this candidacy and paid little no attention to Florida. Ask @JLeslie her thoughts.

@jca2 Wow. I’ll look up that article. I felt like it was more or less a tie. I really see no rhyme, reason, or logic with how the left media and the more balanced media evaluate the candidates.

Maybe they are getting nervous Nikki could be Biden. I’m very suspicious of underlying motives.

Edit: I had the same type of cynical view during Democratic primaries.

@elbanditoroso Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a total asshole and I would never vote for him. The shit that comes out of his mouth, the woke comments, the fight with Disney, the book banning in FL, I don’t know how anybody in Florida could live with that and I can’t stand to see him or hear him.

I actually like Haley, if I had to vote for a Republican.

JLeslie's avatar

@elbanditoroso As you know, I’m a Democrat living in an area that is heavily Republican. I don’t hear anyone around me complaining that DeSantis isn’t focused enough on Florida. Neither Republicans nor Democrats are saying that.

DeSantis has done some things for Floridians that were positive, and so anyone who likes him, has that in their mind. The people who hate him probably wish he was less focused on Florida so he would stop doing executive orders and signing off on laws that further the religious right wing agenda.
