Can Iowans early vote or early caucus for primaries?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) January 15th, 2024 from iPhone

Have the people of Iowa already started to vote?

Should all states have early voting to account for bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances or scheduling difficulties for voters?

I don’t hear anyone on my TV encouraging Iowans to vote now the last two weeks when frigid cold weather was moving in. I know a lot of them stay undecided until the last minute.

How does the caucusing work for early voters?

@canidmajor This shows https://www.cbsnews.com/video/how-the-iowa-caucuses-work/ there is no early caucusing in Iowa so the information is incomplete in your link, unless I missed it. I guess maybe your link is being technical about early voting vs early caucusing, but it seems important enough that it should be specified.

If you look it up, you’ll see that the meaning of the caucuses is that they meet in person on a specific day so the question of early voting is moot.

@janbb Yes, thanks for your answer. I know it’s meant to be done face to face so I did assume they couldn’t do it early, but they could maybe have two dates to deal with bad weather or people who need to work that day.

I like the community part of people getting together and having a chance to hear someone speak about the candidates and I think they have time to discuss and ask Q’s too. I don’t like that voting time is so limited. I thought they don’t have a secret ballot, but it looks like they do. Maybe it’s the Democrats who don’t use ballots, or maybe it varies by county or has changed over the years.
