Is nasal saline spray irritating for you?

Asked by JLeslie (65790points) February 4th, 2024 from iPhone

I just tried it for the first time and I found it irritating.

Do you find it helpful?

I just got through covid. I actually took Paxlovid (the lower dose) for two days and my sinuses and nose felt clearer than EVER. It was a bizarre unexpected feeling. I had to stop the meds and my congestion and fever back.

Now, I’m better, and tested negative, but still feel a little congested. More like I think the nasal passages might be irritated a little. I tried the saline, trying to avoid medication like Afrin, and I found it irritating in my nose and causing a mild headache, so I wondered the experience of others.

Never tried it. Don’t want to. Don’t like putting anything up my nose.

I was told not to use straight tap water for nasal irrigation.

Because it is salt, it will slightly irritate tender or raw tissue. Then that goes away and it feels better quickly.

Is there spray that is just sterile water instead of saline? I wonder if that would be less irritating.

I’ve never used it.

@canidmajor That’s why some dentists and oral surgeons recommend it instead of the high priced mouthwashes.

I use it in my mouth and have used it in my nose. I didn’t find it irritating in either. You could just boil some water and let it cool, then use a bulb syringe.

I’m not sure if they make sterile water nasal sprays. I couldn’t find one using the search:

is there a sterile non-saline water spray for noses

I have tried it once, and my only issue with it was that it did not work at all to clear up my nose.
A complete waste of money. Better to stick to Olynth.

I’ve found it helpful and non-irritating at times.

I can’t use Afrin as it gives me nose bleed. I use the saline spray ALL the time without problems. I don’t think that I’ve ever seen the non-saline spray; but then again, I’ve NEVER looked because I find the saline to be useful.

I’ve never used it. I do use a neti pot when I think I may have been exposed to something. Right now with flu doing its thing I use the neti pot when I return home from being out among the English.

I’m still having a mild discomfort in my sinus from it. Trying not to freak and hoping it will go away by itself.
