In a lot of cases healthcare resources are wasted on the elderly. In the USA at least it appears that most people reach old age in a world of pain caused by themselves and could be avoided. Poor diet, alcohol abuse, tobacco use, recreational drug use, lack of physical exercise over several decades causes many diseases. Such as obesity, liver disease, diabetes, heart and lung disease etc.

Of course there are those who do everything right and still get all sorts of diseases in their elder years. As well as those who do everything wrong and live healthy to over 100. Life is not fair.

Good health!

In many cases: wealth.

The aphorism itself seems motivated by a bitterness and resentment to being old, and knowing that their time is nearly up.

Death – death is wasted on the aged. The older we get the longer we should live; we’ve learned from experience and are so much wiser than the young. most of us

I guess it really depends on what is meant by “old”. Are we talking about someone in their 40’s? Or someone born in the 1940’s? Not everyone in their 70’s is old. Conversely, I’ve met a number of younger folks (30’s, 40’s) who seem incredibly old!

@Strauss old enough to say that youth is wasted on the young.

I have never personally said that, so that must mean I’m truly young at 75!
