What old habit, custom or routine did you do as a kid but rarely or never do now?

Asked by Pandora (32398points) February 26th, 2024

Today, I was dusting my dog’s fur off my velour blanket and it reminded me how we used to always dust off our sheets and covers before making our beds in the morning. We used to also change our sheets every Saturday which required a routine of spraying down the mattress with Lysol or rubbing alcohol and letting the mattress be bare for at least an hour before covering it up again. If the weather was nice we also opened the windows for the mattress to so call get refreshed.

For a few years, I still practiced spaying the mattress with Lysol and vacuuming but now I only do that maybe once every 3 months. Not every weekend since I have a mattress cover that I just take off and wash.

Same for eating 3 meals a day. It was free in the military, but when you’re too lazy to cook or don’t wanna spend money, I’ll have 2 meals or 1 meal lol.

Folding towels, pillowcases, and sheets juuuuust riiiight. Prayer. Ironing – now it’s rare.

Spraying the mattress with Lysol or alcohol? I have never heard of such a thing. I wonder if that was commonplace?

As a teen in high school I did my hair and make-up every day for school and my nails every week.

As a kid through early adulthood I drank Coca-cola every day. I gave it up over 20 years ago, although I do cheat once in a blue moon.

Waking up in the winter time and turning on the news. In NE OH, every kid knew that you started your morning off watching the ticker tape at the bottom of the screen. They listed every school closure in the area.

When I was a teen, I talked on the phone with my friends. Now, I almost never talk on the phone. The majority of my communications with friends now is texting or private messages, or email.

When I was a teen, I used a curling iron to style my hair. Now, I own one but I may use it once a year, if at all. I also got perms and used Sun-In to lighten my hair. Now, I never do those things.

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house. They had a beautiful old Victorian on the banks of a huge local river, and it was a treasure trove of old stuff from the 40s, 50s and 60s. The house had incredible stained glass windows and beautiful wood trim, and lots of doors and porches. It was such a cool house and I loved spending time with my grandparents. Now they’re both gone and the house was sold in the 1990s. The house still stands but the windows have been taken out and it was remodeled inside, so I barely recognized the real estate photos the last time it was for sale.

When I was a kid, I used to read books a lot. Now, I read books but I don’t have the concentration that I used to have. I am not sure why, but I know it’s something a lot of my friends talk about. I like to read magazines, like The New Yorker, because they require less of a commitment.

Rode my horse.

janbb's avatar

@Dutchess_III I was a horseback rider too.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I used to lay on my horse and read. Also read on the roof of my house. Read over the heating/AC vents. Read with a flashlight under the covers.

OMG. Went to the pool every single day during the summer. Never read there tho.

@JLeslie My mom was a germophobe. Correction still is. She’s 95 and its only gotten worse. Somethings aren’t worth cleaning to her. She just throws them out.

Eating toasted eggos with corn syrup. Now I microwave for a minute and use blueberry syrup. Is moist.

JLeslie's avatar

@Pandora I’m a little like that, but not about every day germs if that makes any sense. I guess all of those harsh chemicals she still did ok. 95 years old.

I used to read every spare moment, including late into the night, every day. I rarely read now.

Stay up at night until the Test screen came on when the station went off the air.

@JLeslie At the height of covid, I would spray down every surface where hands touched with lysol. Not every day, but after people would visit. Especially doorknobs and bathrooms and stair rails.

JLeslie's avatar

@Pandora I rarely use spray even though I do own it. A bottle of Lysol or Microban can last me ten years. I am not exaggerating.

I did wipe switches and handles during the height of covid with alcohol or some other antibacterial wipe if I didn’t have alcohol, and I still do it if I am in a situation where I think there might be a risk.

Morning or evening chores on the farm—feeding, watering, milking goats. Or in summer walking out to the pasture to pump water into the tank for the sheep.
