And do you carry one, or several, in your car?
I think it was in the late 90’s that I last looked at a paper map.
The print was so small, they weren’t really easy to read.

I volunteer for a local historical society and they have a lot of maps. I’m presently helping organize them.
As far as actually using a map, for something practical like getting from point A to point B, I went to Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana two summers ago and I was going to use Waze, but a friend came with us and she insisted on using maps. We’d pick up maps at the local travel centers that are long the interstates. It was actually good because the maps showed the big picture. Waze just shows where you are now and the immediate area, and of course you can zoom out, but with a paper map, it was really good to see exactly where you are, what’s around, what towns are nearby, etc. It was a good idea. The maps were free.
I’d do it again if I did a long distance drive.
I still have road atlases and maps in my car, and some in my house. I actually used one a few days ago in my car.
yesterday. Always have them in the car, for when GPS or cell service is unavailable.
One for each state around me – Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, both Carolinas.
I used one about a week ago to find a trailhead for a hike.
Today actually. It was a city map. I use an atlas for travel. No GPS.
When we did our trip out west, I used Waze in conjunction with the paper map. Waze helps give you an ETA and also helps steer you around any problems, like construction and accidents. Even if you choose to remain on those routes, it adjusts the ETA, which can be helpful.
A few weeks ago I used a paper map that my son drew.
I use paper maps (waterproof) for hiking and for ocean kayaking all the time.
November 2022 I used a paper topographical map while hiking the Grand Canyon North Rim to South Rim. Didn’t really need it.
Last night. Making a game about the battle of Antietam.
There are maps in the car, but this thread reminds me I should update them.
I always bring a paper map when hiking and I keep a copy of the “Times Atlas of the World” at home.
@Zaku and this thread shows me that I really need to keep some in the car. I didn’t think about cell service being out.
I have an Atlas on my floor. We were on a 3 hour trip and I didn’t have a book. Gasp! So I read the Atlas.
Last time I went hiking I used a trail map. My glovebox is still full of maps. When I air travel to an unfamiliar city it always is a painful reminder just how reliant I am on GPS when I have to rent a car and drive. It’s this unhinged, alien, helpless feeling when you’re out in traffic and your GPS is not cooperating.
