What do you think a good motherboard is for a new computer?

Asked by KRD (5274points) March 14th, 2024

I am looking at building a new computer for gaming and some work but I can’t find a good motherboard. I want to use the ASUS brand for the motherboard. The cpu is an Intel core i7–12700k and the gpu is a rtx 3060ti. Can you help?

Unless you are going high end with overclocking, you can safely go with a cheap board.

The company I have trusted most in the past has become even more high-end than it used to be. FWIW, they use/recommend:

Mini-tower:
ASUS TUF B760M-PLUS WiFi II (Intel B760 mATX)

Mid- or full tower:
ASUS ProArt Z790-Creator WiFi (Intel Z790 ATX)

Those may likely be overkill for what you need (their low-end for these is the i7 14700K 3.4GHz (up to 5.6 GHz turbo), and RTX 4060 Ti), but they’re certainly good motherboards.

Go to pcpartpicker.com

Pick the CPU and GPU you have so it filters for compatible motherboards.

Use the filters on the left to pick what you need or want.

Look for reviews of the cheapest available options in case there’s something significantly negative about them (hot VRMs is usually something to avoid).

If someone had a gun to my head forcing me to use Intel, I’d probably pick a B760 chipset.

Motherboards have negligible impact on performance for normal use, so it’s not worth spending a fortune on.
