If the media is all left wing bias...rest in details?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23474points) May 31st, 2024

Why did they not have a field day when the Republicans stopped all federal funding for cancer research, cancer kills 600,000 Americans a year.
Can the Rep/cons get anymore heartless?

All media (in the US at least) are large corporations, and by definition extremely right-wing. There is nothing even remotely left about media. CNN, NY Times, Fox News, MSNBC, Washing Post, etc are all radical pro-corporate propaganda.

But the myth of left-wing media serves Dem and Rep parties – and corporate media – so it persists.

The idea that main stream media, which are all controlled by massive, soulless, opportunistic corporations, the very symbols of unfettered capitalism and whose only goal is to make all the money, is “left wing”, is simply asinine.

CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, etc. have one goal and one goal only—that you keep watching their channel. So they drum up drama, keep the talking heads going, and rely on the echo chamber of people to head nod and agree with everything they say. They use their platforms to mold opinions that are beneficial to their shareholders and pocketbooks.

I’m less down on some newspapers, but it’s similar.

I remember hearing about it. The right did it to bug Biden whose son had died from cancer & he had meant to pass a bill to cover ALL cancer patients. I’m sure that 45 put the word out that it best be blocked!!!

@Caravanfan is right in that most left wing media is as bad as the right wing. I’ve started going to Fox for the right slant & then hit the left’s side to balance it out. I get a lot of my info from the BBC & the AP both of which seem to have not totally caved in the process. I don’t believe in any of them anymore & choose to hear everyone & think for myself!!!

@LadyMarissa Which sources are you calling “left wing media”?

As an actual leftist, and I think I speak for nearly all actual leftists, it is a terminally annoying facet of our reality that liberal media and ideology is conflated with that of the left, which liberals actively detest and work to undermine and supplant every day.

News panders to their target base. Fox is right wing, CNN is left wing and the others are mostly left wing. Talk radio is right wing, NPR is left wing. Reuters is somewhat balanced and as close to “news” as we’ll get but it’s still all shit.

When was the last time anyone has seen a fair interview with an actual Marxist significantly to the left of someone like Bernie Sanders on the “left wing” news? I’m not sure it’s ever happened in my lifetime. Meanwhile they interview right wing psychos all of the time and treat them with kids gloves. I reject the premise of the question.

Caravanfan's avatar

@Kropotkin and @gorillapaws are correct, but as a liberal I do not detest leftists, although I acknowledge that leftists detest me.

I certainly wouldn’t say ‘all’ but some are Left. Anyone with any age on them can see the yellow journalism very clearly compared to the factual reporting we grew up with. If there’s spin to the left or right, it’s not news imo-it’s propaganda.
Podcasts are a bit scary to me as some are quite biased/unhinged but entertaining. Not sure that plays out well for more impressionable minds.

@Caravanfan I think the vast majority on the left are not full of hate. They may disagree with certain positions or viewpoints a Laissez-faire capitalist may support, but they generally don’t hate people for having those views or making the case for those positions. Conversely, I see a lot of contempt for the left on mainstream media from the establishment. You’ll see this complete dismissal of things like universal healthcare as “unrealistic fantasies,” as if the left is advocating for everyone owning unicorns or something, when every other major nation on the planet has it and it’s less expensive and has better outcomes.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Yes @gorillapaws but the ultra wealthy capitalists don’t benefit from universal healthcare and you can’t have that right?

gorillapaws's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I’m convinced that if Obama had implemented single-payer healthcare, there never would have been a MAGA, and the Republican Party would have shriveled to just religious whackos and billionaires. It’s hard to make the case that Government doesn’t work and is itself the problem when it’s successfully improving people’s lives in a meaningful way.

ragingloli's avatar

@gorillapaws
I am not so sure.
I have seen the right wing protest signs with “keep your hands of my medicare”.

Caravanfan's avatar

@gorillapaws Not from you. From others on this site I have received vitriol, albeit not recently. But mostly because I have learned not to poke my face into those questions because it’s liable to get punched.

The idea that your everyday Republican down the street does not want some healthcare reform is propaganda. Where I do agree with some on the far left here is that news media, being under corporate control, spins a narrative that is fed to lower IQ tier and is repeated by them. It’s an effective approach. Speak to anyone on the middle or downward face of the bell curve and you will find support for some flavor of healthcare reform. It’s actually nonpartisan when it comes to your neighbors and peers.
