Is the meaning of most lives for more ?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) June 2nd, 2024

We have all heard that most of us are living better than kings 200 years ago, and yet we are still sad.

Are we evolved into craving ”more”?

I’d say YES. I have noticed that with the majority of people…the more they get, the more they want!!! Even if you look at the ultra rich, they always want something different. They usually want more money.

Who says we are sad?

@zenvelo Sorry I was projecting. I get sad from time to time. Fruit, Fluther and Family help me.

Sounds more like devolution than evolution, to me.

Don’t think so. Some of us are resilient and if we’re not content, figure out what to do. As far as material goods, some of us are happy we have enough. But sure, everyone is sad about some things some of the time; that doesn’t indicate we want more stuff.

Our lives are short, and we seek ways of buffering against existential anxieties.

In our modern society, the means to do so mostly involve buying things, overeating junk food, supporting some sports team, thinking your country is better and more righteous than others, thinking your religion is the one that will grant you immortality in paradise, thinking your political ideology is the right one.

As for a king 200 years ago: A king got to live in a palace, wear the best clothing, eat the best food, have dozens of servants, and a pick of multiple mistresses—as well as be the most important person in the country, with the highest status, and have their name immortalised in history. I am pretty sure a lot of people would swap their current lives for that.

@Kropotkin Thanks for killing that meme of poor people living like kings 200 years ago.
