How can you see what’s behind you without looking back in this situation?

Two friends walking on a narrow trail side by side both with earphones or headphones with bikers coming from behind occasionally yelling “On your left!”…you then have to quickly switch to walking single file for several seconds to avoid getting hit.

How would you improvise a solution? Thanks!
