Can I use a regular metal pole as a flag pole?

Asked by jca2 (16827points) June 29th, 2024

I just bought a new American flag with a five foot flagpole a few weeks ago, from Costco. We had a bad storm here last weekend, with high winds and branches down, and the flagpole bent.

I am willing to buy a new flagpole from Amazon, which is about 12–15 dollars. However, I am wondering if I can use a regular metal pole instead.

Would it work? I have the pieces that connect the flag to the pole.

What is a “regular metal pole”?

@Call_Me_Jay A piece of hollow stock metal.

Yes, it will work.

Are you planning on raising and lowering the flag? OR leaving it stationery all the time.

Regular pole won’t work for raising and lowering unless you put a pulley on the top.

@elbanditoroso No, it stays in a bracket that’s screwed into the deck.

It does depend on the metal. Iron/steel rusts in the elements, so you’d need it to be pained, galvanized, stainless or a metal like aluminum.

I’m pained. In my butt. Does that count?

@Dutchess_III Haha. thanks for the correction. I’d say it counts.

It’s OK with me.
