Was there a presidential primary for the Democrats in 2024?

Asked by JLeslie (65789points) July 2nd, 2024 from iPhone

Forgive my ignorance, but did Democrats vote for Biden in a primary in 2024?

In my state, Florida, we didn’t have a vote.

Who was on the ballot?

I just heard someone on TV saying Biden won the primary, the voters have spoken.

Really? I don’t remember hearing any serious challenge to Biden.

There was a primary in New Jersey but Biden was the only candidate listed for president. There were other candidates running for other offices.

Officially there was a primary for the Democratic primary. However the DNC managed to drive RFK Jr off the ballot and the only ones they left on the ballot were Joe Biden, Dean Phillips, and Jason Palmer. In other words, they rigged it so Biden would be the winner of the primary. However the way the DNC does it is they wait until the Democratic National Convention to name their nominees for POTUS and VPOTUS candidates. And the other odd thing with the Convention is the Superdelegates. These are delegates that are not committed to any one candidate. They can vote for whomever they want. We saw this play a big roll in the 2016 election when Hillary paid millions to the DNC to bail them out of financial trouble in return for all the superdelegates votes at the convention. These delegates make up roughly 15% of the votes. It should be notes that the GOP has superdelegates as well, but they do it differently. There are 3 superdelegates per state and they are required to vote for the candidate that won their state.

So to suggest that the people have spoken is a bit out there. There are still a lot of votes that could be used elsewhere. As we saw with the 2016 election, whomever the party elite want as the nominee will get the votes. So much for democracy.

Yes, there was a primary in WV in May with Biden on the ballot. Along with some local offices.

JLeslie's avatar

@chyna Who ran against Biden in your state?

Zaku's avatar

In Washington State, the Democratic Party primary POTUS candidate votes were:

Joe Biden 83.5%
Marianne Williamson 2.8%
Dean Phillips 2.8%
Other 11.0%

In Oregon, the Democratic Party primary POTUS candidate votes were:

Joe Biden 87.0%
Marianne Williamson 7.1%
Other 5.9%

BTW, I notice that Trump only got 76% of the R vote in WA. In OR, R voters don’t seem to have had a choice.

JLeslie's avatar

@Zaku Only 76%? You must be being sarcastic, that is very high.

Zaku's avatar

@JLeslie Usually it would be, but this year, the GOP platform is essentially “whatever Trump says”, and e.g. Oregon doesn’t even seem to have an alternative candidate, but 76% is less than Biden’s 83.5 to 87%, and that in contrast to the narrative some people keep repeating about how some people think Biden shouldn’t have been the nominee . . .

I dunno, everything in US politics seems far more crazy than usual this year . . . I suppose paying attention to such numbers is the least of it, and not really worth mentioning.

@jleslie no one.

JLeslie's avatar

@chyna To me that is not a primary if only he is on the ballot.

@Zaku Look at @chyna’s answer. I have a feeling a lot of the Biden stat are worthless. Not your specific state stats, but overall if they are including stats where he was unchallenged. Manipulative bullshit if I am correct.

There was a lot of fuckery behind the scenes by the DNC to ensure there was no viable challenge to Biden. Apparently, in a normal primary, the state picks their delegates for each candidate to send to the convention, but this year the states were sent lists of delegates to represent Biden.

@JLeslie It looks to me that (from a brief web search) that either @chyna was incorrect that no one ran against Biden in West Virginia, or I’m missing some point. I am seeing:

Joe Biden 70.5%
Jason Palmer 11.5%
Stephen Lyons 7.6%
Dean Phillips 7.5%
Armando Perez-Serrato 2.9%

chyna's avatar

@Zaku You are absolutely right. I stand corrected. I guess when I went to vote, I only had eyes for Biden.

JLeslie's avatar

^^That’s interesting from a psychological point of view. I’m not criticizing you, I have no memory of so many things.

@gorillapaws Was there a primary for Obama or Clinton for a second term?

Zaku's avatar

Obama was mostly unopposed in 2012, but there were other candidates in some states. There’s an overview here:

Similar for Clinton’s 1996 reelection:

@Dutchess_III

The 2024 Kansas Democratic presidential primary took place on March 19, 2024, as part of the Democratic Party primaries for the 2024 presidential election. 39 delegates to the Democratic National Convention will be allocated to presidential candidates. The contest was held alongside Arizona, Illinois, and Ohio.

President Biden won in a landslide, though None of the names shown did win three small counties and 10.3% of the vote. The counties that None of the names shown won were Ness, Rawlins, and Sheridan counties.

@JLeslie

Both Obama and Clinton had to go through some delegate selection process to be nominated for a second term.

Each state has a means of awarding delegates to the nominating convention. Iowa does not have a primary, they conduct caucuses.

It used to be about half the states conducted caucuses, and half conducted primary elections. But the caucuses were a legacy of the old “smoke filled rooms” of machine politics, and primary elections open the process at more transparent and open nomination.

I wonder if the 2024 turmoil is going to bring about change in the future.

JLeslie's avatar

@jca2 Things have been changed in the past, so maybe do. I can’t remember if I wrote this on fluther recently, but up until the 70’s there wasn’t really a primary vote from what I understand.
