Why do the bots like old answers?

Asked by Smashley (12551points) 2 days ago

Not 100% sure that this is what’s going on, but have y’all noticed the uptick in random, dormant accounts getting GAs? I know we all give one from time to time but it seems out of proportion. Are the bots building clout? Amplifying topics? Confusing things? Trying to entice old users to return? What’s the point?

And if I’m wrong about who is doing all the ancient answer loving, let me know that too!

I think that bored jellies cruise “Related” questions to ones posted and give GAs.

I agree with the Penguin ^^^^^ ! !

Could be. The rate seems out of proportion. It’s also something I noticed some of the actual, older but hidden bot accounts do before they pop up with an ad.

I’d bet money that the increase is mainly due to @RedDeerGuy1. He has said that he spends time reading old questions and giving GAs or GQs. I see 2–3 votes on oldies almost daily.

^^^ My guess too (although I don’t think it’s just recent). I think he also follows people who have been gone for years, right, RDG? There are still tons of ways that this site is good for entertainment.

Anyway, I don’t think it’s bots, just real people amusing themselves (and not even necessarily bored).

Now and then I give a GA to some random old quip, mainly for the fun of seeing the name of an honored and long-missed jelly pop up in the feed. I don’t follow the departed, though.

Possible. I check out bot accounts (which these days pop up from unknown, dormant accounts) when they come up, and giving GAs before they post seems to have been a pattern. Unfortunately we can’t really research it since all the info gets quickly scrubbed when they’re flagged.
