A moment of remembrance for Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Richard Simmons?

Asked by smudges (11061points) 2 months ago

Ages 96 and 76 respectively.

Dr. Ruth was shocking to many, but needed in her time.

I used to Sweat to the Oldies with Richard and lost a lot of weight. He was loved by millions for his compassion and enthusiasm.

Who is the greater loss to society?

I thought Simmons was much older. I was surprised to hear he was in his 70’s.

They both were great in their own way.

I have friends (married couple) who stretch every morning with a Simmons video.

Westheimer was a really interesting person actually. She was German Jewish and was sent away to school as a youngster when the war was heating up. Her parents stayed behind in Germany and killed by the Nazis. Eventually, she emigrated to British controlled Palestine and then later was a sniper in the Israeli army! She was badly injured during her military service. Eventually, she went back to Europe (I don’t remember which country) and then made her way to the US.

@elbanditoroso I can’t choose – they were equally important in different ways.

@JLeslie Thank you for that info. A sniper!! I wonder how she became the famous sex doctor!

@smudges She wasn’t even five feet tall, I would never guess she would be a sniper. I found it interesting the military gave her that position, and that was back in the 1940’s or 50’s I would think, when it would be unheard of for women to have that position in the US and so many other countries. I don’t know why she became so interested in being a sex doctor.

I just read on facebook, she wasn’t sent to a school, she was sent to an orphanage by her parents to escape the Nazis. OMG. These stories take a toll on me. Often on fluther when we talk about giving up a baby instead of aborting a pregnancy I say I would not give up a child unless the Nazis were coming for us. I wonder if most jellies really understand that parents did give away their children to save them, or sent their children into the woods hoping their children would live. Heartbreaking.

I miss seeing the happy kind of energy Simmons brought on the TV screen.

There were rumors of Simmons being held hostage by his maid or something like that, for the past decade or so. He wasn’t seen at all, ever. He did supposedly put out a statement on the topic, a few years ago, but no one could confirm if he actually said it or who it came from because it was just a written statement.

I remember that. I’m guessing it was a rumor, but don’t know for sure.

When I was a kid, he showed up on Saturday morning, wearing a skintight human body suit.
I always thought he was a very kind, and good man.

May he journey well.

The stories are not of being acquainted with Dr. Ruth. They are about me having that role in a particular location for a few years.
There were men who saw me as their go to. It was early in her career, and she wasn’t heard in our area yet.

The funniest thing I ever heard her say was to a man who asked what is too small for a penis.
(Read in her voice)
“Is it bigger than a thimble?”

RIP Dr Ruth. You have a good rest coming.
