Albertans: Are you ok?

Asked by Jeruba (55987points) 1 month ago

I saw news about the fires in Jasper National Park. Is anyone in the vicinity of Red Deer in any danger? Please check in.

How odd. The Topics list would not let me put in “Red Deer,” either with caps or without. Could that be because it’s a user’s name?

In Red Deer is light smoke. My mom (inspired_2write) has been evacuated, from Jasper national park. She had time to bring her bug out bag.

Also most of Alberta has an excessive heat warning.

I have ac. It only cools the a small area next to my living room couch. That is the area where I spend most of my time, as everywhere else is too hot after 30 seconds.

It’s a super bad fire year here in western Canada, lots of evacuations, and alerts a fire close to us has gone from just over 200 hectares to 20,000 in a week the nearby town is on alert meaning have a bag packed and be ready to go in a moments notice, our town has no alerts but we are only 15 kilometers away from us, so our entire town is a bit on edge.

Glad you two checked in so quickly. Do please stay safe.

@SQUEEKY2, I didn’t understand this part:

> we are only 15 kilometers away from us

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Sorry meant to say the town on alert is only 15 kilometers from our town, and our town has no alerts as of yet.

Again sorry you asked about Albertians, and We are in the interior of B C.
As of today our province has over 700 fires going most started by dry lightning.

@SQUEEKY2, of course I’m glad you responded. I knew you were out west somewhere, but didn’t recall specifics at the time. Jasper in the news focused my attention on RDG, but I want a reassuring response from anyone who’s at risk from the fires or any other natural threat.

P.S. Albertians—Thanks for the correction. What do you call B.C.ers?

@RedDeerGuy1

Is your AC a window unit?

Update The Maligine lodge hotel in Jasper, where I had my first real job, as an adult, has burnt to the ground.

I was working in laundry and housekeeping. For $6.75/hour. In 1995. I recived a retroactive 2 month raise from $6.25 because I was the only staff member who cleaned up a costumer malt liquor party in 2 rooms.

@Tropical_Willie, well, ok. I thought the answer might be British Columbians. @SQUEEKY2?

@RedDeerGuy1 Sorry to hear about Maligne Lodge, a lovely old building and Jasper National Park seems badly hit. Hope you and yours are all OK.

Update @all My mom prefers her privacy, but I can tell Fluther that she is all right. Her seniors lodge burnt down and their is nothing left (genealogy record’s, my school stuff, ...)

The lodge is looking after its residents, and some have insurance.

On the good side, she managed to create 6 books of our families genealogy record’s in Blurb and they are safe because they are online.
