Was Vance a wise pick for Republicans?

Asked by kruger_d (6591points) 3 months ago

I think this from author John Ganz hits the nail on the head:

Trump’s G.O.P. was never about a coherent policy regime or even ideology; it’s a structure of feeling and Vance embodies that: Anger, wounded pride, resentment, contempt, and ultimately, hatred and despair. More than anyone else on offer perhaps he is the New Republican Man. This is why he was picked.

@kruger_d no, and they will regret it. He is doing more damage to the ticket than help.

But the good news for the republicans is that they now have a scapegoat – someone to blame – if Trump loses. They will blame Vance for the loss. (rather than ask why he was picked in the first place.)

Having someone to blame is more satisfying than introspection.

He is weird enough to fit in with the rest of the party. Typical Republican.

He helps he Dems more than the Reps. Every time he opens his mouth, Kamala gains another vote!!! Wise??? I don’t consider anyone in the MAGA movement to be wise.

Yes. Apologies. I can’t entertain a question that has the words “Republican,” and “wise.”

They probably think he automatically gives them Ohio.
It’s rare, that a VP could swing a solid color state.

I thought a younger, white Christian sell out, was just about the worst idea they had.

I was certain that they would try to select a minority. Tim Scott, I thought would have been a “wise” pick.
He’s black, and he’s not a female. (Trump can’t have some woman as his running mate.)
And Tim is also a sell out. He wouldn’t upstage Trump, and that’s YUGE to Donald.

The optics, of them lynching a black man, this January if Trump doesn’t win, would not be good.

If this was Trump’s first run at office, his VP would be less of a factor. As it is his second run, he cannot run again. Pulling in someone that could carry the torch of the party into the next election becomes much more important.

Vance is young. He is closer to a common man than to an elite. He had to drag himself up to the level he has attained. He is not stupid, he is level headed. Yes, I think he is a good pick. He is not my first pick for VP (Byron Donalds got that), but he is a good one.

And don’t forget that Trump’s age and corpulence may cut Trump’s term, if elected, short.

Wulf hit the nail on the head, though.
Trump will say, and do a lot, on his own. But just like a dem candidate, he is really a puppet for the party.
Trump may have tried to separate himself from P25, but only a fool would believe that will be a reality.

Trump’s recent rhetoric, has been unapologetically racist and I don’t think they even care how obvious their wild/unrealistic agenda is anymore.
Trump’s sheep, despite what they say, are the exact same group from 2016. They have NEVER wavered in their support, and nothing will change that.
The VP, if not for Trump’s age, would certainly be completely irrelevant for his people.
But Vance, has so far illustrated that he can say stupid and highly offensive things with the best in his party. He’ll suffic, for the conservatives.
Maybe conservative men, will ALL start wearing eyeliner?
