Is anyone else as excited as I am to hear Kamala's VP choice?

Asked by janbb (63257points) August 3rd, 2024

There are some great possibilities. I think she’s going to announce this weekend.

I know this is politics but this is something I feel good about – at least for now.

In Social but if it becomes a debate between two people, I will flag.

I know she had already crushed everyone’s hopes that she would shift the pro-genocide policy when she made her speech about “antisemitic” protests recently, but rumors now have Shapiro as the front-runner in consideration. This would be a complete pro-genocide double-down, completely throwing the “lesser of two evils” possibility out the window before even really starting their campaign together.

Not my party, and I can’t see anyone in the running that is even remotely worth voting for. But part of me is still hoping they’ll surprise me and pick someone who is not pro-genocide.. I know my Democrat friends would like to vote Democrat.

Makes no difference to me

It will determine if I vote for her or Dr. Cornel West. If she picks a bona fide progressive I’ll hold my nose and vote for her. If it’s an establishment darling like herself, and especially a genocidal one, then I’m out. It will demonstrate that defeating Trump is not their highest priority.

I’m about as excited as getting a root canal.

Depends on who it is. She could hit a home run, or she could strike out.

I’ll get enthused when she announces it.

I am very excited about her candidacy. The change to her at the top of the ticket thrills me. I am waiting for the announcement happily, but it’s with less emotion than I’ve felt in the last week. Perhaps I’m just coming down from the high of the great events.

For me, I wouldn’t use the word “excited.” I’m more curious.

I’m still not sure if I am going to vote for her. I am not saying I’m voting for Trump. Never that. I just may vote for Mickey Mouse.

@hat This. I was under no illusions that Kamala represented a significant break with Biden, but any hope I might have had that she would present a slightly different tack on the war in Palestine due to not being a lifelong ardent Zionist like Biden, was dashed by her very basic and disappointing comments on protesters. And it will only further be driven into the ground if she chooses Shapiro. With standards set near rock bottom, I’m still holding out the slightest glimmer of hope that her choice of VP is anyone but him.

Que sera, sera.

@jca2 ” I just may vote for Mickey Mouse.”

If you do that and Kamala loses then the blue-no-matter-who crowd will blame Mickey!

Just for the record, Harris has made more nuanced statements about Gaza and Israel than Biden has. I believe she would push much harder for a cease fire. And I also think Shapiro is against the war; he’s quite leftist. Please don’t paint all Jews with the same brush or even all Jewish politicians.

mazingerz88's avatar

@elbanditoroso No one amongst those few potential picks would feel like a home-run to me. It’s either going to be a safe choice or an underwhelming one imo.

@janbb: “Please don’t paint all Jews with the same brush or even all Jewish politicians.”

Don’t do this. You know that’s not what’s happening. You know that my opposition to Shapiro is only because of his position on genocide. The person I’m voting for is Jewish.

Re: Harris and “nuance” – we can certainly discuss this later. But she most definitely came out confidently that nothing would change. Her “nuance” was insulting and probably worse than saying nothing.

janbb's avatar

I certainly was not calling you an antisemite if that’s what you’re thinking. I know you’re not

But I guess even higher than my hatred of the genocide in Israel and it is high and I blame Israel for that, my one issue is a woman’s right to reproductive health. So I want to win this one if for that alone if not for a myriad of other reasons.

My friend in the know insists that the DNC is urging her to pass on Shapiro because he will be a bigger influence where he is. I’m not that excited over any choice she has. I’m choosing to wait until she announces & then make up my mind from there.

I am.
Hoping for Kelly, happy with anyone.

I have been close to panic stricken facing the possibility that Trump would turn America into a dictatorship. Haven’t felt this type of fear since George Wallace ran for President.

“Surprised” more accurately describes my feelings. Number 1, VP Harris is black. After Obama’s terms of office I believed America would never elect another black man. I firmly believe that Donald Trump was America’s “payback” for having the audacity to elect a black man as President. I can see no logical reason such a morally challenged person would be elected other than revenge.

Number 2, she’s a woman. No woman has ever been elected President of the United States. As fractured as the nation is politically I would never have considered a female President possible.

Considering these factors I’m caught off guard VP Harris is seemingly getting tremendously positive support so far. I’m hopeful that support continues and turns into votes ‘cause I can’t bear to think about the consequences of that lying convicted felon winning the Presidency.

I am, but her choice will not affect my decision to vote for her. I’m voting for her regardless because I am voting for future SCOTUS, women’s rights and LGBTQ rights.

IMHO, generally a VP doesn’t do much on their own. They are there to support the president and represent POTUS when and where needed.
That said, I hope trump people realize that his VP could very well be leading the country due to trump’s age and health in the next 4 years. Frankly, his views scare me as much, if not more than trumps views.
I think any one Harris picks will be a breath of fresh air.
I’m sick of angry white men.

jca2's avatar

I just saw a news headline that read something about Kentucky governor clears scheduled ahead of Harris’ naming her VP nominee, sparking speculation, or something like that.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

I’ve never been excited about a VP running mate choice. I don’t expect to be especially fer or agin whoever Harris picks.

Demosthenes's avatar

Silly @hat. RFK Jr. isn’t Jewish. ;)

hat's avatar

^ hah. But seriously – as much as I don’t get the Dem/Rep choices because they essentially agree on all critical issues, those selling RFK as an alternative are very unserious people. The guy is also pro-genocide. The only thing he brings to the table are brain worms and dumping a bear carcass in central park.

jca2's avatar

@hat and having a worm in his brain.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@jca2 and @hat that died in his brain . . . toxic brain maybe ?

gorillapaws's avatar

Looks like she went with Tim Waltz. I guess I’m going to vote for Kamala Harris… (hooray?) The first time I’m voting for a Democrat since Obama’s second term.
