Have you ever shopped for groceries on a full stomach?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24796points) 1 month ago

I did for delivery just now.
All I wanted was milk.
Did I save money?

Is there a downside to grocery shopping on a full stomach?

Humor welcome.

They say not to order groceries while hungry. Are they right?

The upside to being full is that while you are in the shops, you are less likely to get the thoughts “Hmm, i really want some cookies.”, “oh look, snacks!” or “Oh man, that box of bbq chicken wings looks inviting”.

@ragingloli Thanks. Your right. Also I don’t usually eat impulse purchases before they go bad. Because I never really wanted them in the first place.

Ever? WTAF, RedDeerGuy1? Yes, of course! I am capable of planning and acting based on ideas and plans and lists. I don’t wait for my stomach to drag me around looking for food . . . well, unless I get really hungry, which I tend to regret.

Yes, “they” are (in this case) right. If/when I shop when hungry, I tend to get less healthy crap and/or things that were poorly-considered choices, or just more food than is going to be easy to eat before some of it goes bad.

I don’t allow myself to enter a grocery while hungry. When I do go in hungry EVERYTHING looks good, sounds delicious, & I can just taste it. Snacks become almost nonexistent when full. Having 1 gallon of milk delivered might not have saved you a fortune, but it might have. I’m fortunate in that I don’t have to use home delivery.

Also, make a shopping list on your phone.
Not only will it prevent you from forgetting to buy something you needed, but it also makes it easier to not succumb to temptations when you are just slavishly going down the list of items.

I order online all the time and try to make sure I’m not hungry or in a hurry or just in general feeling down or needy. It can cost a lot to fill your heart when you really only want to fill your stomach.

Where I shop for delivery, they charge you $7.00 if your total is less than $35, add a 4–5 dollar tip and the delivery fee and you’ve spent some major bucks just for a gallon of milk, or else bought lots of things you didn’t need or truly want.

When I was in my 20’s and learning all about “adulting” I came to the conclusion that unless it’s for something specific, I should never shop either when I’m hungry or when I’m stoned; definitely not when I’m both!

We wouldn’t shop any other way

Shopping on an empty stomach is always more dangerous to the diet and wallet than on a full stomach. Splurge buying goes way up. I’ve done it, but usually if I am already out, haven’t eaten and have to stop on the way home. If I’m leaving from home, I always grab something to eat before I leave.

When I’m using instacart, I’m not necessarily hungry, but I always try and spend the minimum for free delivery so I force myself to think ahead about the things I might like to prepare in the next week or two.
