Is putting olive oil in my ear supposed to hurt?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24944points) 3 months ago

My family doctor said to put olive oil In my ears before I go to bed and after I wake up. In order to clean the wax out of my ears.

After on the 20th she will flush my ears of the remaining wax.

Am I applying wrong? Or is the olive oil rancid?

I just stick my finger in the olive oil spout and tip it until a drop goes on my finger, and repeat for both ears.

What do you suggest I do?

I never used olive oil. I used mineral oil.
Since this came from your doctor, you can call his office if you are experiencing pain.

For starters, make sure you’re using 100% real olive oil. And yes, it needs to be fresh, not rancid. Here’s why:

My best guess is one of three things:

1) The olive oil is fake or rancid.
2) The air conditioner is hurting my ears.
3) My ears are hurting from my inserting my fingers.

My ENT doc said to use a mix of 50% water and 50% hydrogen peroxide using an eyedropper. Not oil.

Update I have a virtual doctors appointment over the phone today. Will update Fluther with the results.

There is OTC product made to break the wax buildup down. Either that or just ret them flushed by an ENT or a walking clinic

Update doctor said to stop putting stuff in my ear. Also to tell my Family doctor on August 20th.

I’ve NEVER used Olive Oil; however, I have used Mineral Oil or Baby Oil. I don’t put it on my finger to get it in my ear. I use an eye dropper & just drop 1 drop into the ear canal. Follow that with a small piece of cotton to keep it from draining onto my pillow. I’ve also always used “warm”...NOT HOT…oil. My feeling is IF it hurts, it’s NOT good for you!!! I agree with your doc, wait a week & talk to your family doctor!!!

We use an over the counter ear wax softener not olive oil. And sticking your big man fingers is probably the cause of the pain. Just drop it in with your head sideways. :)
(Per our doc)

Putting olive oil in your ear shouldn’t hurt but if you have an ear infection, a perforated eardrum, or any other issue, applying oil could cause discomfort or even worsen the situation

Update I am going to the doctors office , in a couple of hours, about my ear pain.
Also I will see if I can get my ear wax flushed.

Will update after.

Ewww, don’t use you fingers, that contaminates the oil.
