Am I the only one who unconsciously strangles himself at night?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) 3 months ago

Sometimes when I sleep my hand grabs my neck, and squeezes.

Is that normal?
Have you done anything like that?

Not normal and probably unique, though it may be in DSM-5. I would try wearing a pair of oven gloves at night.

@flutherother Thanks. All I have are silicon gloves, and will have to order the compy cotton ones.

@flutherother @all Update I ordered a cheap pair of cotton oven mitts. Will arrive today. Thanks. I will bring it up with my psychologist tomorrow evening.

No, and that’s really really strange and a bit scary.

@all Mitts arrived and are nice and comfy. Will update after a few sleeps.

You can also buy some BDSM gear and chain your hands to the bedframe.

Sounds like something a character of Edgar Allen Poe might do.

Normal is subjective.

That was fassst! All of my crap takes at least a day!

I don’t strangle myself, but I was strangled in my sleep once, on a camping trip and I was in a tent. And the hiccups wake me up at least once a week. : (

Sleep is a weird state.

^Yes. Sleep is weird.

Strangling myself, in my sleep?
If it’s ever happened, I don’t recall.

May I ask; is there any dream relation with the behavior?
Like, are you dreaming about the same thing, while choking yourself?

Perhaps a journal would help.
Keep a journal for a while.
Make sure you mark times you had the issue. Cross reference with any other data. You may find a correlation…

I use a CPAP machine when I sleep and occasionally if I am sleeping. Fitfully I end up getting wrapped up in the air hose. But thankfully that doesn’t happen very often. Even more. Thankfully it’s never tight enough to run even remote risk

The only time I’ve tried to suffocate myself is when I put my hoodie on but it’s backwards so the hood covers my face. I’m triggered just thinking about it.

Are your self-strangulation episodes accompanied by any dreams?

Any chance you’re taking a sleeping pill or Melatonin??? I quit taking Melatonin because it caused me to have very strange nightmares that freaked me out because they felt so real. Years back, there was a sleeping pill that caused sleep walking & sleep eating. I never took that one out of fear I’d wake up in a neighbor’s bed. I forget the name of that one.

I’ve known a lot of people who have had odd things happen to them, but this one is a first for me so be sure to mention it tto your doc with your next visit!!!

^Oh yeah! The stories I’ve heard.

Personally, when I tried it, I pissed myself in bed.

I know a lot of people that used to use it, and I used to read stories about what people did on that drug.
People were eating (not my words) “glue sandwiches,” and some people were running around like an evil twin all night, doing all kinds of things.
I know that my coworker, randomly shaved her roommate’s dog one night.
She didn’t remember anything. Her roommate was like WTF?

Update Oven gloves worked. Also helps with drooling. Will keep wearing them at night.

Also It prevents me from scratching.
