Robert Kennedy Jr dropped out of the presidential race. Will it help Trump?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33590points) August 23rd, 2024

First, Kennedy is a discredit to the Kennedy family for many reasons, not the least of which is that he is selling himself out to the republicans. (There are other reasons, vaccine-related, which make him an even greater ass).

By dropping his bid to be president, the theory is that Trump will be helped because Kennedy’s supporters will vote for Trump. I’m not sure I buy into this – if someone wanted to vote Trump why would they have considered Kennedy in the first place?

What I would like to see is the sane members of the Kennedy family (Caroline and the next generation) say load and clear that the Kennedys repudiate Trump in anything he does.

What do you see as the effect of Robert Kennedy kissing Trump’s butt?

They have. Here you go.

Yes. To what extent, who can say?
The only point of his candidacy was to draw votes away from Biden, and with him being replaced by Harris, there was no point in continuing this farce. Especially considering the actual result was drawing away votes from the Orangutan.
Unsurprisingly of course Mr. Worminhisbrain has endorsed the orange turd.

@Tropical_Willie Thanks. And to answer the main question, I doubt it will be significant but echoing loli, who knows?

The Kennedy clan wasn’t going to vote for him or Trump !

chyna's avatar

I’m pretty sure the Kennedy clan is mostly Democrats.

JLeslie's avatar

I think it will help Trump.

In my state and several others Robert Kennedy Jr was taking votes away from Harris so . . . no gain for “Clairol Strawberry Blonde and Spray Tan” also known as DJT !

I’m conservative. I will not vote for Trump for numerous reasons. And certainly will not vote for a far lefty like Harris.
I was going to vote for RFK Jr. as a protest vote. Now I’m not voting at all.

From what I’ve read, it might help him get a few more votes but it won’t help him any within swing states nor with the Electoral College.

@gondwanalon ”...far lefty like Harris.”

Harris is an establishment Democrat. She’s centrist, pro business, and despite the rhetoric, will focus on token measures for optics, but cater to the priorities of her billionaire donors.

ragingloli's avatar

Even your most leftist mainstream politician, Bernie Sanders, only qualifies as a stock standard social democrat in Europe.
You have no idea what “far left” means.

chyna's avatar

I know he can’t help it, but I can’t listen to his voice.

@gorillapaws HA! Go gaslight someone else.

I think RKJ’s ability to do pushups will draw some of the gym teacher voter bloc away from Walz. ;-)

Brian1946's avatar

I wonder what would happen if Trump dumped Shady Pants for worm brain. ;-)

@Brian1946 Interesting thought!

elbanditoroso's avatar

My theory: RFK Jr is lobbying for Trump do get rid of JD Vance and make him (RFK) the VP candidate.

JLeslie's avatar

@elbanditoroso I don’t think Trump would ever do that, but RFK might be vying for some other position.

jca2's avatar

@elbanditoroso If Trump made RFK his VP, they’d be two old white guys which is not a good look.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@jca2 true, but I think Trump is more comfortable with people of his generation.

jca2's avatar

You may be right, @elbanditoroso but it’s about getting elected, and if he wants to get elected, he has to think about the look.

He’s pretty much endorsing Trump. But, I don’t see this helping Trump, as much as Harris. If it helps…

It’s important to NEVER forget, that we almost had 3 old white men running for POTUS, in 2024.
AND. The least demented one, literally had a fucking worm eat part of his brain!

IT SHOULD NEVER COME TO THAT AGAIN. Ever…

KNOWITALL's avatar

I think it will. I also think people underestimate RFK’s political savvy.

@gondwanalon Here’s the ranking on the political compass.

Would a “far left” candidate reverse her policy, abandoning support for Medicare for All?

Demosthenes's avatar

It seems gay conversion advocate Tulsi Gabbard has also endorsed Trump.

I’ll sure miss being browbeaten over not supporting her or RFK Jr., though. ;)

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Demosthenes She has verbally expressed regret for those positions and in 2013 signed an amicus brief supporting Edith Windsors challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act.
She helped support the Equality Act, the repeal of DOMA, and many more.
She apologized in youtube video as well.

I’m not saying she didnt go along with her dads brainwashing back in 2002 but from all I see she’s reversed that.

Vote your heart, of course, as long as you have CURRENT facts. All this 20 years ago he said/she said leaves zero room for personal growth, and is a trick used by media. :)

Demosthenes's avatar

She has been supporting reactive anti-LGBT legislation in recent years. I’m under no illusions about what she’ll put her support behind as a Trump backer or potential member of his cabinet. People undergo personal growth, yes, but they also tend to fall back on old habits. I realize there are few places in this country for independents to go, but it is disappointing to see independents join the “anti-woke” bandwagon. How about an independent who uncompromisingly supports LGBT rights and opposes genocide in Gaza? Neither Kamala nor Trump nor Tulsi nor RFK Jr. can claim that. Once again I feel apathetic about an election.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Demosthenes Okay, I get that. I don’t recall your location but lgbtqequalitypac.org/endorsements shows candidates for voters.

RFK jr’s recent endorsement of Trump is made easier to understand when you see he has a fascination with whale heads.
